I am absolutely, 100% fed up with people who identify themselves as a [Something]-American.
Obviously, things in your ancestral homeland sucked enough that your great grandparents or whomever decided to piss off and go to the New World to seek their fortune. Your ancestor who emigrated, they were hyphen-Americans. You are not. America was and is the land where people want to go to- millions of immigrants, legal or not, tell the tale. How many people are busting their hump to emigrate INTO where your ancestors came from? Why? Because this is America. We are all Americans. Period!
Did you personally emigrate from East Elbowstan or wherever you say you are from? NO? Well F-off, then, you are not a hyphen-American, you are an AMERICAN, be proud of who and what you are. I don't care if your ancestors came from England, Africa, Columbia, Spain, I don't care. You're not an African-American unless you personally came from Africa. Kim DuToit is an African-American. He's entitled to use that moniker, but he doesn't- because he correctly realizes that being American is enough.
You're not a Latin-American unless you swam the Rio Grande and got naturalized. No citizenship papers? You're a Mexican. Got naturalized? You're an American. It's a funny thing, all those people who claim to be Latin-Americans, and demand their rights, but can't be bothered with stuff like going through the process and getting legitimate citizenship.
The purpose of Hyphening is apparantly to somehow elevate yourself above being American. If you are so ashamed to be just an American, I pity you- maybe you should stop being an American and just go back to wherever was in front of the hyphen. See how bad stuff is in your ancestral home, then rejoice- you are an American after all.
