Supposedly this guy made it to another airport and landed there, on his wheels.

OMFG!!!!! I can't believe he didn't crash!!!! His props are all messed-up, yet he can still fly!!!! It's NOT that HE'S AMAZING, his AIRCRAFT is what's DAMNED AMAZING!!!! It STAYED TOGETHER - EVEN AFTER having its props chewed upon the runway!!!

Isn't there an alarm that tells you your wheels are still inside the airframe?

It's called grinding noises and vibration. Came through pretty well on the video, too.

Any pilots on here willing to speculate as to why the hell he didn't just stay down? Was there a point to taking off again and going around, aside from trying to die by flying on chewed-up props?

It depends on the airframe I'm sure. I knew a pilot in the Nav who made a wheels up landing in a T-34. He was a still a student at the time but was cleared of fault as they apparently determined that he did what he was supposed to do and the "wheels down" light or whatever was telling him they were down even thought they were not.

Navy pilot? Better bar at the alternate field?

1. Well for starters, there's this thing called a check list.
2. Many planes have a "wheels down" light that comes when you put the gear switch in the down position. Others, the light illuminates when the gear actually locks down. HOWEVER, see #1 above.
3. One of EAA 614's pilots has a Comanche, and it has small mirrors on the wings so you can see if the gear really came down or not.
