HATBANDS!

Post by skb12172 »

Everything I've read, leads me to believe that a leather, interior hatband on a quality hat is supposed to be desirable. However, wearing such a hat, especially in hot weather. especially as a bald guy who has no hair to sop up sweat, is uncomfortable.

What is the prevailing wisdom on the subject? Would it be unwise to have the hatband replaced with a more comfortable, sweat-absorbing cloth band? Where would you even have that done?

When its hot, I wear an Orvis straw hat, or some other types from a hatter in Charleston, w. some stretchy "technical" fabric hat bands.

They are much nicer.

The (brimmed) hats that I wear have no hatbands. The felt hat has a dark sweat stain and I always wear a bandana under the straw Amish-style hat. Rendezvous hats.

Specifically, I've got a wool, paneled pub cap I bought in Ireland. I love the hat, but the interior headband is leather, making it uncomfortable to wear, especially if my head sweats even a bit. I'm thinking I should swap it out, but don't know if that would be bad for the hat for some reason. Likewise, I don't know where I would have it done.

Leather keeps the sweat on the sweatband, where it belongs, and off the hat, where it looks gauche, unless you're rounding up illegal aliens in the summer, or herding cattle pretty much anywhere.
If you bought a larger size or had it stretched slightly, and then put in a removable (and launderable) liner band, provided it didn't show, you would be better off, and "cooler", in both meanings of that term.

But FYI, "hatbands" are what goes on the outside of the crown. They are to the hat as feathers are to the male peacock.

Yes, you are right. What I was calling the hatband is, I guess, the sweatband. Where do I get one of those removable liner bands?

Here.

Otherwise, stick-on velcro and suitable fabric at Wal-Mart, et al, are your friend.

And hey, since we're playing semi-archaic fashion for $500, a gentleman's handkerchief is a suitable substitute.

From here I went and found this. Now I have another project... This is all your fault.
