So even with the amount of room the Mega, I'd like a "dirtier" place to store some basic tools and recovery gear. I'm pretty much set on a toolbox, unless someone can prove to me that a cap or bed slide/drawer is the way to go.
I was looking at a Weather Guard, possibly to be combined with a hard tonneau cover by Extang. I'm concerned about how high up the Weather Guard will come behind the window. I think I want a gull wing version so I can access it without getting up into the bed.
Looking at storing some ratchet straps, tow straps, chains, entrenching tools, crowbars, hatchets, bungees, etc.

go big or go home. cross bed box _over_ a crossbed reserve fuel tank.

why choose. Get a cap and put a tool box inside up against the cab that doesn't go from bed rail to bed rail.

the first one is not how I would do it, but you get the idea.
or you could do this.

Re: Think I need a truck toolbox
I've thought about the additional fuel tank, and meh, not right now. The Mega only has a 6'4" bed, so I need to drop the tailgate if I ever haul 8' lumber. Keeping the box on the rails will still allow me to slide some underneath it. I DO, however, want to find a way to securely keep at least some reserve fuel in the truck. I had a metal jerry can mount inside my Avalanche's bed, and it worked out great. I just need to find a way to keep some secure in the Mega.
I think I'll cut a board to the same size as the Weather Guard and put it on the rails to see if it impedes my rearview mirror. I'm guessing it will, but not as much as I think it will.
Precision, I actually really like the ammo can idea in that thread. Especially considering I basically have unfettered access to nearly every ammo can the military uses.
FYI, every time I step on the gas, a hippie somewhere gets punched in the back of the head.
