My grocery store is awesome

I learned today that Fred Meyer's now carries Glock 20 magazines. The price wasn't any worse than for the last few I bought, either, and of course no shipping. I have *ahem* a few magazines, so I don't really need any more, but I had to buy at least one just on general principle. Tossed it in the cart with the frozen pizza, Doritos, enchilada makings, and ice cream. Because awesomeness should be rewarded.

Makes me think about a thread at work today about Walmart carrying ammo. I reminded them that's a sign we're winning.

Someone was actually scoffing/surprised at it (hey, it's California and some guys have never seen things us country boys see as normal -- like a liquor store and gun store on the premises, or are old enough to remember dreaming of the mail orderTed Williams shotgun in the Sears Wish Book).

Hell, in 1980, the first Walmart in El Paso was still selling handguns. I can remember as a teenager in Tucson in 19 (mumble, mumble) going into 7-11 to stock up on ammo.

Back when I was a youngster, to young to legally drink alcohol, we used to buy hunting licenses and ammo at the Ranger Bar.

During the summer of 2011, Academy started carrying a vast selection of 5.56mm ammo. Not 223, no it was brand new 556 from Lake City, complete with the Nato headstamp. They have green tip, standard ball, and, of all things, tracers.
Now, I jumped on the green tip because it came on clips loaded in a steel ammo box complete with the Lake City seal. I also bought some tracers. They are completely useless for me. I don't own a machine gun and no range around here lets you shoot tracers anyway. However, as you said, awesomeness should be rewarded.

Lately, they don't have any of the 556 in stock, but they are stocking mil-surp 12 gauge buckshot and brand new Nato headstamp 9mm. I make sure to buy some of each once in a while to make sure they know I appreciate them having it in stock. The buckshot is nothing special, I think it's the same thing as commercial except with an OD hull. The 9mm is a little hotter than regular, but it is FMJ, so it's useful for target practice and not much else.

And yes, before someone asks what happened to me, I do now own a 9mm and a 5.56. In my defense, the 9mm is a 1981 vintage Browning High Power. The 5.56 is an AR-15, but in my defense, I bought a 45-70 lever action to compensate. Thus, on average, the average caliber of my rifles is, in fact, above 30.

Thought I'd share something and this seemed like the place to do it... Of course, there are no more Glock magazines to be had in Fred Meyer, or just about anywhere else. Was reading the for sale section of another forum, and one of the members there had bought a new G20SF, but had spent the last several weeks sick as a dog, and had not laid in an adequate supply of magazines. This guy was offering to trade 3 of the high zoot AK30 magazines from US Palm (new in wrapper), for ONE G20 15 round mag. And I passed it up.

:D That reminds me of the story of the man who, during prohibition, refused an offer to trade his newly acquired bottle of booze for a horse. He explained later to a friend why he refused the deal, -- "hell, no, that was my only bottle!"
