A hollowed-out book. I can see how this happened, if the owner passed away and the descendants just donated the lot. Dang, I should have been a Librarian in Indiana! 8-)
The Times of Munster reported Saturday ( http://bit.ly/S1XyDc ) that police in Valparaiso are holding the gun as evidence.
I'm sure they are, but evidence of what, since...
Police have determined the gun was not stolen.

Also...
Nelson said this is not the first time a gun was found in a book donated to the library. There was another incident sometime before she came on staff 12 years ago.
That doesn't surprise me a bit. I'm sure it happens a lot more than you might think.

Police describe the weapon as a gold, wooden handled, 31-caliber, single shot, black powder gun.
Hmmmm, made of gold, wonder if the book was signed out by Scaramanga. I'm betting it's an engraved pistol. Too bad there's no pictures.

It's a brass derringer. Found this in a quick search. It's an Army San Marcos repro.
