New Jersey teen sticks head out of party bus, dies

FORT LEE, N.J. – A teenager headed to a Sweet 16 party was killed after he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch of a double-decker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass, police said.
Daniel Fernandez, of Sayreville, N.J., was among 65 teens aboard the bus Friday night as it crossed the George Washington Bridge from New York City, said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The accident occurred at the Fletcher Avenue overpass of Interstate 95 at about 6:30 p.m.
Alex Franco, a security guard on the bus, told the Daily News that he had warned the teens to leave the hatch alone.
"I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don't understand," he said.
Franco said he went downstairs to tell the driver that it was getting too hot.
"It was very hot. Everybody was dancing. Two, five minutes I was downstairs," he said. "Then I heard two guys screaming, `Oh, my God, oh, my God."'
Designer Transportation, which operates the bus, expressed its "deepest heartfelt sympathy" for the boy's family. It says it plans to conduct an internal investigation.

Please Keep Arms, Legs, Head, & Hands INSIDE the Ride....
Or you might wind up DEAD (instead of just being STUPID):
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

As others here have pointed out on other topics, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Maybe I'm cold hearted, but I have trouble feeling sympathy for people who kill or maim themselves by doing something dumb. I feel sorry for the people they leave behind, but for the individual who won the Darwin award I just can't feel sorry.
A few weeks ago a woman was killed while crossing train tracks when a train was coming (on the train line I ride daily). I know the area, there are crossing gates, lights, bells, and the train blows the horn on the way thru. If you ignore all that and decide to play chicken with the train, and you lose, that's your own fault. Hose off the engine and let's get these commuters home. As the old Burma-Shave signs said: "Please remember/if you'd be spared/trains don't whistle/because they're scared."

Yep, same here. Well in this case I also think his parents failed him pretty badly.MarkD wrote:As others here have pointed out on other topics, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

TEENAGERS on a party bus, guessing alcohol wasnt a factor (if it was, that was fail # 2) if you can't control THAT, don't do the job.Kommander wrote:I am wondering what else he could of done...Yogimus wrote:translation: I am just here to collect a paycheck, and my job performance is borderline fraud."I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don't understand," he said.

That may not have been a possible option to the guard guy.Yogimus wrote:TEENAGERS on a party bus, guessing alcohol wasnt a factor (if it was, that was fail # 2) if you can't control THAT, don't do the job.Kommander wrote:I am wondering what else he could of done...Yogimus wrote: translation: I am just here to collect a paycheck, and my job performance is borderline fraud.

These situations often involve an unfortunate misalignment of responsibility and authority. As in the fellow sent along to 'provide security' is expected to be responsible for preventing/stopping any number of bad things, but actually only allowed very limited power and authority.
