Been working around a canadian guy. Got a question I thought it would be inappropriate to ask him.

When he says "f**king A", is it "f**king eh", or "f**king A"?

Fucking A, or Fucking A1 or Fucking A1 OK is used.

Ending of the sentence with the word "eh" is an Eastern Canadian thing...It came from the French who would use the word "Oui" (Yes) as a statement or question..."I want two eggs looking up (sunny-side up) with patattes and feves--so sorrrry--beans, oui"....The problem is in the French Canadian accent which makes the word that sounds in Parisian French as "wee" come out as "way" which got Anglicised to "eh".

Impress him with this exclamation; instead of "shit" like in doing something wrong not the bodily function or byproduct thereof (merde), with the word "tabernac" pronounced "taah-burr-knack"...It calls attention to the Tabernacle in Roman Catholic religion and is heard by English as much as French speakers but only in Eastern Canada or South Central Manitoba.

Also, meaning the same thing, coming from Thunder Bay, Ontario region down into Minnesota is "Oofta" pronounced "oooof-tah" which is a Swedish/Norwegian exclamation.

that's core bit of vocab in the Navy of the 80's. Positive affirmation. As in "F'in A, Bubba! F'in A!"

I know a Canadian here, expat like me. He's a military veteran and rides a Harley so I should like him, but he's a smug insufferable bastard and I'm going to punch him in the face soon.

I'll post pictures of the aftermath, he outweighs me by about 100lbs so he is definitely going to kick my ass

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog...
At least that's what my old coach used to say, but who are we kidding? Your going to get your ass handed to you....

We have some Canadian friends, (BC) in our vintage trailer club. I forget they're Canadian until they drop an "eh" or "aboot".

My neighbor (and insurance agent) is an expat, raised in rural British Columbia about 450 miles north of the US border (or about 150 miles from Alaska. Outside Smithers if you know BC), but his family is Norwegian (grandparents came from Norway direct to BC), and he says it all the time... though he pronounces it as appx. ooffdah.
That's a new one for me. Any idea where it comes from? The only thing I can think of is an Anglicized "Usch då", which wouldn't be a very strong exclamation.

ETA: I checked Wikipedia, and it seems that was a pretty close guess.

He's also so conservative he makes me look like Mao, and owns more guns than I do.
My wife uses that one regularly, she gets it from her father's family who are partly Norwegian. And what I hear is more 'oofdah' as well. Seems to be a general-purpose expression, gets used in situations where you'd otherwise use anything from a loud sigh, to an 'oh, shit'.

And the AF of the 90s, and of the Army and Marine corps since at least the 60s.
AF in the 80's as well.
