Looking through my latest credit card statement, I noticed a charge for about $10 that looked a little mysterious. I Googled the referenced telephone number and discovered it belonged to a company called National Union Fire Insurance co. (NUF) operating out of Jacksonville, Florida (they seem to be headquartered in New York, and have offices in Pennsylvania). I also found that there were quite a few complaints from all across the nation against this company for fraudulent charges on credit cards.
The scam evidently goes like this, they send you an offer for insuring your accounts, sometimes inside your monthly statement envelope (which to me, indicates some collusion between the bank and NUF). The offer may be an "opt out" offer where you have to respond to turn down the offer. I usually tear up and trash the offer paperwork, sometimes before reading, so I could have received an "opt out" offer (which should be illegal as hell) and trashed it without reading. Anyhow, I've been on the hook for a couple of months now.
The banks identified in the complaints were Wells Fargo (my current bank), Chase, Wachovia, Huntington and Barcleys.
Reading the complaints indicated that these people try to stonewall you when you try to resolve the situation, even going so far as to claim they have proof that you authorized the insurance.
I'll be visiting my bank in a few days to get this "nickel and dime" dinging stopped
