Fun fact: in China, the laundromat is basically nonexistant, as the Chinese think using public washing machines is unsanitary, meanwhile, "gutter oil" is a thing there

You know I had to look that up.

Can we add the phrase 'China wins again.'?

Note to self "avoid". :)

Actually, the Chinese knowing themselves better than anyone.... In China a public washing machine almost certainly would be pretty horrifically unsanitary. It's in CHINA, used by CHINESE PEOPLE.

Aw hell. This year just sucks. :(
Budd Davisson wrote a nice piece about Mike Dillon on his blog:

He doesn't have it set up to be able to permalink to a particular article, so if you go to read it at some later date, you will have to scroll down to find it. But for now it's at the top of the page.

My sons went to HS with a number of Chinese kids (boarding school). My boys tell me that pretty much none of them had a clue how to do their own laundry and sort of expected to be able to pay someone else to do it. Except no one else would, so they would end up having to figure it out themselves - and did poorly.

It was nice having the boys go to school with international students, they learned a lot. Now, when they hate foreigners, they know why.

I've complained enough here about people I work with who don't understand the operation of a toilet (really, crap on the WALL behind the toilet, and all over the seat). Lack of laundromats would barely make my radar until I went there and ran out of clean underwear.

I recall when Connie duToit went to India on business, and got a serious bacterial infection because she forgot to keep her mouth closed in the shower and accidentally swallowed some of the water. One of the nice things about the USA (and most first-world places) is that if a pipe comes out of the wall of a structure, and it has a faucet on it, you can drink what comes out of it without dying. Might not taste good. Might even not agree with you (for some reason the water in Washington DC always gives me the runs), but it won't KILL you.

In fact my wife and I enjoy cruises, often to the Carribean, and rule #1 is NEVER eat anything off the ship. I'll rarely even drink anything off the ship that didn't come in a can, although I did violate that at a Senor Frogs in St Thomas last cruise while my wife and her friend went shopping. I figured there was enough rum in the punch to kill anything (including me if I'd had more than a couple).

We forget that civilization, and the benefits thereof, are rare in both time and geography.

I guess at boarding school they had insufficient access to livestock. I joke, that type of person wouldn't be going overseas to pricey schools - that would be the new generation of rich spoiled only sons (I would say only children, but they're all boys) who don't know how to do anything but spend parental funds.

One semester in college I had a roommate like that. Not exactly the same, he was from a rich Hong Kong family that fled the takeover, but he was still rich spoiled useless Chinese kid. You would not believe the amount of money he lost betting on college football, and that was one of his less annoying vices.

They're not prejudiced, they're informed.

Yesterday I produced a spreadsheet for my manager, and she got some counts from that spreadsheet. She asked me to check her numbers, so I did so, using the file I imported into the spreadsheet (just easier that way). One of my counts was one off from hers, so I told her that. She said "Run your analysis again, let's see if we can get the numbers to match." Ummm, if I run the same analysis again, on the same file, I'll get the same results. Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Instead I sent her the specs I used for my analysis (taken from a phone call we had earlier in the day). Turns out she made a change, which she used in her analysis, but never told me about it, so it wasn't in mine.

And people ask me why I drink.
