High today was 61-63 depending on who you believe.

Re: Cold Snap
It hit 16 degrees here in the Virginia Tidewater last night. Lake behind my house had ice about 3-4' out from the shore.
But (thanks to that Timehop thing on the wife's FB) I was reminded that exactly one year ago we had a thin sheet of ice all the way across the lake.
So at least here, it was colder (and had been colder for a bit - took a few days for the ice to get all the way across, IIRC) last year.

-6 degrees last night, wind chill -25 degrees. They canceled school. My dogs however think going in and out to play in the snow is great fun.

So it is cold, freezing mist, and so of course as it happens about every other month, some incapacitated fool jumps the sidewalk in his car and takes out a power pole outside the apartment complex. From about 1:00 to 7:00 PM the power is out all up and down the street and Sam's has to shut down because they are on the same line. No pizza at Sam's. The Wall World on the top floor is open because they are on a different power line. Of course the escalators and elevators are out so you have to walk up two flights of escalators. I made the trip because I was out of black pepper, the apartment was getting cold, and I was down to my last can of Sterno. The power company final got the power back on while I was at the Subway in Wal Mart.
If we ever get hit by an EMP strong enough to fry digital circuits we are going to be in a world of hurt. The stoves in the apartments are electric and the hot water heaters are gas heated. The problem is that when the power goes off the the regulator for the water heater fails safe.....no hot water till the power gets turned back on.

This summer I add another layer of insulation in the attic and get an estimate for insulating the walls from the outside.I also need to pick up a bunch of old army wool blankets. I use one on the window nearest my bed as a blackout and it also keeps the cold from getting any further. Sure they aren't pretty but they're effective.
I can go get the plastic film for the windows, but I'm not sure how to cat-proof them. Thus, blankets.

Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."
