One major problem is that they don't actually know how to live. They've never really learned the full range of adult behaviors (it's no accident when the author says these women are like the men their mothers divorced) so they're responding to an unfortunate situation - the stress of having to be responsible, and having your life not entirely be your own anymore - with what they know. To "relax", "unwind" - aka party. I learned quite some time ago that people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. Nothing, outside of you, has the power to MAKE you happy.

For example, my Mom was happy. She was the second oldest of ten children (and the oldest girl), so she was taken out of high-school to help take care of her younger siblings. Her parents thought education was wasted on a girl who was just going to get married and have kids, and she's learn more about those areas by helping raise her brothers and sister. Her first husband died young, leaving her with with four children and one on-the-way. She married her second husband (my Dad) about ten years later (1961), she miscarried twin girls before I was born in 1963. My Dad was disabled in 1975 in a work related accident. She was poor most of her life, she NEVER went on vacation (the only time I ever knew her to sleep outside her own bed was in the hospital during the illness that killed her), and she spent most of her life living check-to-check. When she died she had less than $200 in the bank. Still, she said she was happy, and she acted like she was happy.

Then I hear about these coddled, self-absorbed prima-donas who aren't happy with their nice houses, nice families, comfortable lives, and they feel the need to go out and get shitfaced and laid to give themselves a little stimulation. Hey Honey? Try spending a day doing bike repair at a United Cerebral Palsy Bike-a-thon, where you see kids younger than yours who'll spend the rest of their lives in a wheelchair IF they're lucky. Try going with your priest to visit a psychiatric nursing home and bring Communion and God's love to people who own literally nothing and can't always tell reality from fantasy. Try visiting people in a nursing home, including a woman who had Altzhiemer's and was sitting in her chair shaking in fear of she-didn't-know-what, she just knew she was scared. Talk to people at the same home who are just being warehoused until they've had enough and curl up and die, who's only apparent worth to anyone is that the Medicare and Medicaid checks keep rolling in to keep the home open. I've done all of those, and it's taught me a couple lessons: 1) I'm friggin' lucky! 2) there but for the Grace of God go I, and 3) I don't have ANY problems.

Try doing something worthwhile with your life, you might find you're happy without actually trying to make yourself so.

I recently had to explain to a 41 year old female acquaintance of mine that dating in your late 30's to early 50's is now a man's game. Women no longer have the advantage they ostensibly had when they were younger and better looking.
