IL-76 Takeoff

Post by Darrell »

A fully loaded IL-76 needs every inch of runway to take off in Australia. The air traffic controller makes some interesting comments as it's happening. Found over at arfdotcom.

If I remember correctly, the IL-76, doesn't rotate nearly as much your typical Boeing 737. This though was definitely amazing, as it looks like they became airborne very very close to the end of the runway.
The important question I have though, is what is a Russian cargo plane doing in Australia? They run out of beer and decided to switch to vodka?

That is the heavy lift plane, it is used world wide and is pretty common here in this country.

In the Russian Federation and the Soviet Union before it, non-human consumption of vodka is a crime punishable by instant ass-kicking and/or bullet to the head. It's why ethanol laced gasoline will never, ever exist in Russia; if people learned that perfectly good ethanol was being poured into gasoline, 25% of the population would die after trying to get drunk off the gasoline (mainly due to trying to light their cigarettes after having a drink) and the other 75% would cause riots and chaos that would make the 1917 Revolution look like Buddhist monks protesting.

Hmm... that sounds like a good way to slow Putin's ambitions down...

It was probably also humid, making the air density altitude sucky for being heavy.

When I lived up in Leadville, Colorado, it was fun watching aircraft take off from the airport and climb to get out of the valley. Leadville has the highest airport in the US, at 9,927 ft elevation, and it's surrounded by 14,000 ft peaks. Planes would routinely do a zigzag climb, back and forth, back and forth, over the valley to gain enough altitude to clear the peaks. They'd really struggle sometimes, depending on weather conditions. I lived several hundred feet higher than the airport, up on the hill east of town; one night I was sitting at home and heard an airplane doing the usual zigzag trying to gain altitude, he'd get louder and the pitch would increase, then get quieter and the pitch would drop. This repeated a half dozen times or more, getting louder with each pass, then I heard him coming, VERY loud, it sounded like he passed right over my roof (and I got off the couch and assumed fetal position on the floor), then the sound went away. LOL I assume he made it over the ridge east of town, I never heard of a crash/missing aircraft report.
