Total Lunar Eclipse April 15

Post by Darrell »

You might have heard of the upcoming total lunar eclipse next week. Details here:

http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronom ... -the-moon/

Early phases of the eclipse actually start late the evening of the 14th as seen from the western US; there's a table of times for the various phases of the event at the link. You might've also heard about the "tetrad", or four blood moons in a row, some are making silly predictions from it. I leave it to you to look into that. Be sure to watch if you're up late and have a clear sky, the moon's appearance can be quite dramatic. It's a work night for me, so I'll probably be sound asleep.

I was reading about that last week, and thought about the supreme irony of a Blood Moon happening on April 15th.

I got up at 1:20 am and went out to watch the eclipse to midpoint of totality, for 20 minutes or so. Beautiful clear night here, the moon was quite orange.

I did about the same thing. My youngest daughter woke me up when it started.

At about 2 AM, my middle daughter held two open hands out in front of her, palms up. Held up the left hand and said, "Beautiful and rare astronomical phenomenon..." Held up the right hand and said, "Sleep." The right hand dropped, so we all went to bed before it was over.

My kids are becoming quite the facetious smart alecks. My work here is almost done.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

We had thin cloud cover, and the glare of the moon washed out my pictures, otherwise I might have some decent photos of shadowed moon.

I saw a little of it but didn't find it all that impressive.
