Neighbor also mentioned that even after the rest of the boat fire was out cold, the batteries were still smoking pretty good. He said he and his buddy went up with cutters and snipped what was left of the cables as a precaution.

Yep. You won't catch me on a gas inboard or I/O on anything but a small lake where I can easily swim to shore.

Not just to buy, but to operate(the typical 2 cycle outboard hates part throttle operation) and man, when things break(and they do, and far more often), the parts/labor tends to be pricey. I/O(sterndrives) tend to fall into two camps with repairs: relatively cheap and "kids college fund"308Mike wrote: Except outboards of comparable power/size can be VERY EXPENSIVE (and I LOVE outboards too!!)!!

Diesel stern drives offer a coupla advantages - long, stable fuel that won't normally burn(downside is cost), low rpm engines and a higher pitch are more efficient, adding further to fuel efficiency.
The downside is cost - repowering with say, a Cummins 5.9 would cost so much, it's cheaper to just burn more gas.

My rich uncle claimed that a boat was nothing but a hole in the water that you tried to pour money into. This guy loved his toys and piloted his own aircraft until he was nearly 70, but he only owned one boat in his life.
Great picture, though. I have a nephew who works for a yacht service in Madisonville, LA. I'll ask him about it the next time I see him.

My father, who owned boats on and off his entire life, actually had a sign with that on it.PawPaw wrote:My rich uncle claimed that a boat was nothing but a hole in the water that you tried to pour money into.

My brother the boat owner now has it.

My wife and I were watching Deadliest Catch today, and we heard the Hillstrand brothers (from the Time Bandit) talking about how expensive it is to operate a crab-fishing boat - and one of them said: "How do you make a million dollars crab fishing? You start out with TWO million dollars!"
