The Gun Counter

All right, my web-fu has just failed me so maybe one of you guys knows what I'm talking about.


Many years ago, when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, I had this set of history cards, about WWII, which I think was sold by Time Life. And though I can't recall whatever happened to those things, I want them again and if I can just recall what the hell the exact name of it was, I bet I could find it on ebay.

It was a set of cards, stored in plastic tray, with a picture on one side, and the caption and a short article about it on the other side. The cards were divided into a number of categories, such as aircraft, ships, vehicles, generals, political leaders, battles, the home front, industry, and so on. The M1 Garand had a card, as did Adolf Galland, as did the HMS Kind George V, as did the battle of Kassarine Pass, etc.

The aircraft section had a set of cards for every aircraft used in WWII, another section had every kind of tank, etc. All the better know divisions had their own card as well.

I recall they came in a pack of say 20-30 per month until you had the whole thing.

I remember them as War Cards, but I bet they had some other name since all my searches failed me. And there was another set of cards, same publisher, but about the Civil War.

I want to say they were from Time Life, but all my search attempts failed to come up with any kind of card thing from them.

So did anyone else ever have one of those sets and actually remember what the exact name of the set was or who made them?

It ain't World at War, that was a set of books.

LOL, never mind. I found them. They were made by Edito-Service in the late 70s and apparently I won't be getting them for a steal like I hoped. This is another one of those things I wish I hadn't parted with back in the day but I'm not sure I want to spend, say, hundreds of bucks to have it back again.

Those cards look cool, maybe they could do a reprint?

They ought to, they were a good thing to have if you are into history. Better than a set of Time Life Books they were. But from what I found they stopped making them about 1979-80. I guess the still sealed packs that website is selling on ebay are from an old warehouse somewhere. Since the buy it now price on E-bay for them is 15 bucks for one deck of 24 cards, and there are 106 decks in all... well if I called them up to order a full set I'd better be willing to lay down a grand to do it. Or be willing to spend the next year constantly bidding on ebay and willing to lay down at least as much money that way too.

But who knows, if I take a look now and then I may get lucky and find someone selling a full set they found in a box at the back of the closet that don't know what collectors are paying for them.

There is another card set, The Classic Firearms collection. One gun per card. About 2,000 + cards. Wouldn't mind having that one too, hehe.
