Green With Envy: Prius Owners Smile as Neighbors Fume
Monday, August 25, 2008
Every morning, as Lynn Schmidt walks out of her Long Island, N.Y., home, opens the door to her baby-blue Prius, waves to her grumbling neighbor and pulls out of the driveway, she has every reason to smile.
It's not just the 45 miles per gallon her gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle is getting. And it's not only that she can go three weeks without a fill-up.
It's also because that through her choice of automobile, Lynn is doing what she considers her share of being ecologically reasonable.
"Everyone should be concerned about the level of emissions," says Schmidt. "We all need to do our part and make changes for the better."
She's not alone. With skyrocketing oil prices, many owners of hybrid vehicles and practitioners of the "green" lifestyle are seeing their eco-friendly choices pay off.
But that's led to some grumblings from late adopters — and charges that the greener-than-thou are guilty of "eco-snobbery."
I don't agree with this statement: "A big component [of hybrid ownership] is the social aspect," he says, adding that if a consumer just wanted to save money on gas, he or she could buy a new subcompact for $11,000 instead of forking out a minimum of $22,000 for a hybrid. If they said, "A big component [of PRIUS ownership] is........." then I'd agree.
Honda Civic Hybrids look like any other Honda Civic, and mine gets 49 MPG and there's NO eco-snobbery attached.

A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

Which is of course why they don't sell very well.
Nothing else looks like a Prius, it's a big rolling sign screaming "I'm greener than you", which is of course why they're trendy.
Maybe we're just jaded, but your villainy is not particularly impressive. -Ennesby
If you know what you're doing, you're not learning anything. -Unknown

Actually, the Honda hybrids are selling quite well, although not as well as the Prius, and they don't get the press either.
The media keeps feeding people Hybrid = Prius, I mean that's the one the phoney-baloney people are driving, the people who play make-believe for large sums of money, professional liars - pretending to be other people doing thing they've never done in real life (actors and actresses).

Of course when the battery goes south and pollutes the environment with far more dangerous chemicals than just carbon, well, we just won't talk about that, because it's all sunshine and lollipops in our little "green" world.
A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.
of course the environmental damage of the nickel mine that makes the batteries is never discussed. Nor is the immense amount of energy used to ship the nickel to japan where it is put into a battery and then sent back to the US

Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.

To all drivers of Priuses and other hybrid cars/SUVs:
If you're driving a hybrid and you think you're saving the planet, think again.
The only planet-saving thing you're doing is burning half as much gas as everyone else. You're still burning fossil fuel and emitting carbon dioxide. You're driving a car that requires more resources to build. Your car isn't made of paper mache. It generates the same, if not more waste in it's manufacture and eventual demolition as any other car on the road. It contains much more toxic metal and chemicals which will have to be recycled someday, generating more hazardous waste.
If you really want to be smug about your tiny carbon footprint, go live in a mud hut somewhere on $1 a day. You paid too much for a basic car which will cost twice as much to service. If you're lucky, your savings on fuel might make up the difference.
"If at first you don't succeed, that's one data point." XKCD
It take the equivalent of 1000 gallons of gasoline to make a hybrid. With that initial infant carbon foot print on in its birth certificate, it takes a decade of use for a new hybrid to pay for its manufacture and operational costs.
It's really much "greener" to by a used car with decent gas mileage.
