Thanks for that info. I’m making a point of not reading anything similar to avoid being accused of plagiarism (I’m not Fraududent Bribe’m after all )

Other thing would be that the Germans who immigrated to Texas were very “Republican” in the 19th century sense.
I doubt they would have kept the “von”.

Probably true, else the Americans would have had one Chester von Nimitz taking the reins as CINCPAC in 1942. (Chester Nimitz was supposedly descended from a chap name of Ernst Freiherr von Nimitz.)

Except that my fictional patriarch, Heinrich von Stahlberg, was associated with the Adelsverein, the group of German nobles who were funding colonization efforts in the Republc in the 1840’s.

The German noble who started Fredericksburg, TX changed his name to John Smith upon arrival. Lots of stuff still called “Baron’s creek” etc but he didn’t use his title once he arrived in TX

Looking good. At this rate, how long till the complete book is done? And will you be self publishing on Amazon? I need to know so that you can earn a few measly pennies from this old sailor.

The one thing that stuck out to me:
I know you're trying to get the point across to the uninformed reader, but this does not quite work for me.
Maybe remove that sentence and modify the next one to something like:
As a military attache in the Berlin embassy I certainly saw a lot of what the Germans were doing, officially and otherwise. Do you think that the American and British military attaches here in Texas are less competent?
An admiral is going to know that, and having a subordinate use that phrasing could very easily come across as an insult. As I’m sure you are aware, the military attaches in any embassy are effectively legalized spies, whose job is to find out everything they can about their host nation’s military capabilities.

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".
