Long but interesting read
He certainly should have a more prominent modern standing based on his accomplishments and influence on those who came after, but since there wasn't one big thing to attach to his name, it became easy to pass over him.
Insted he had a collection of a lot of moderately big things, and even more importantly collecting those things and many more into a central place that many could use as a jumping off point for further advances. He was kind of a scientific internet before the internet.
