I really liked his music ever since my Dad played what I have to assume was a greatest hits CD all the way through (a couple times) during a 6-hour car ride.

Kevin Smith had done some documentary work for him and said he was told by one of Prince's people that he had a vault stuffed full of unreleased music and videos that "we're never going to be seen by anybody." It'll be interesting to see if his estate lets all of that material languish.
I remember reading that while people expect artists to be flamboyant extroverts in reality a lot of the best ones are introverts who live in their own heads and reality. They will constantly work to reshape the world they live in.
Musically, he was one helluva fantastic guitarist, and fairly influential during his heyday.
OTOH, he was about 5'4", and an insufferable prick with most of the people with whom he came into personal contact, and he hadn't had a hit since, geez...1999.
So I rate his passing a giant "Meh. Bon voyage."
