LibertyCon 27 (2014)

Post by First Shirt »

Anybody going?
I got drafted to attend with The Darlin' Daughter, who's hubby didn't want her to go by herself. It's my first time attending a SciFi convention of any type, and have no clue what I've gotten myself into, other than providing security for The Grandson, an his mom.
(It does kinda bother me that the "adult supervision" will be provided by a 10-year-old boy.)
And if, sometime Saturday, you hear a loud, high-pitched shriek from the area of Chattanooga, that will be The Darlin' Daughter having finally gotten John Ringo, Travis Taylor, and Kurt Miller to sign her copy of Von Neumann's War.
But there ain't many troubles that a man caint fix, with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

If you're even remotely into people watching, you'll have a great time. Otherwise, take a few minutes to scan through the program they give you and find something that interests you. Get on the website and see who the media guests are and attend panels of those who interest you. Check out the artsy stuff. There's some amazing talent out there. I was sorely tempted to drop way too juch cash on an X Wing piece this year. It can be as fun as you want it to be.

I have been to LibertyCon several times.

If you would like, PM me and I can put you in touch with some real good people there to help you get started. Nice, low-key, writer con, with lots of Military authors that I am close friends with.

What really makes me mad about missing it this time is that I will be missing a wake for a damn good friend of mine, that is going to be held Saturday.

Four words: Friday Morning Range Trip. I'd like to be going again, but the budget and the time off just aren't there for me.

It's a literary con, so fewer costumers/cosplayers, and those that are there will likely be dressed as book characters. (I'll attach a pic of a friend of mine dressed as Mosp from the Sluggy Freelance webcomic at a previous LC) Good hospitality suite. Be sure to catch the midnight mad science panel. (Scientists + single malt = Mwah-hahahahaha!) Epic room parties. The musical guest this year is Beth Patterson, who I've linked to here before.

So, what did you think of LibertyCon?

Had a blast! The Friday Morning Range Trip was worth the price of admission, since I got to see The Grandson get an ovation at the range. He dumped a 10-round mag from a Walther P-22 in about 4 seconds, and the shots clustered just under the center ring of the target! Everybody applauded!

The Darlin' Daughter is a full-fledged geek. I'm not, but I speak the language, and know the customs well enough to blend in pretty well. We met some great people, had a wonderful time, and we're already making plans to go back next year. (But next year we're bringing our own toys for the Friday Morning Range Trip!)
