Oscars 2014

There's nothing about the 2014 Oscars here, because I didn't watch, couldn't care less, and doubt there is much of anything worth noting, other than general relief that we won't be afflicted with news about it until about next January, and a futile hope that someday, Hollywood actually starts making movies worth watching again, let alone to which it's worth handing out awards.

That would apply to any year since about 1990, AFAIC...

Hollywood is in the business of making MONEY, not art.

Sorry, my stockage of fucks to give in that arena is on zero, as it has been since 1998.

When Miramax was bought by Disney in 1993...

It takes all the fun of shooting fish in barrels when they strap suicide vests to themselves and self-parody better than anything I could ever attempt.
To her credit, Ellen realizes she's a joke, and revels in it, while still cashing the checks.
Someone at AMPAS needs to tell Billy Crystal he's the Oscar host until he dies, and let him stew over signing that contract by leaving a horse's head in his bed.
ABC should also tell AMPAS that from here on out, the Oscars will last 2 hours, starting at 9PM, including commercial breaks, and that at 10:59, the credits are rolling and the news is coming on, whether they're done or not. There will be no performances, musical numbers, or other foofery. If ratings don't improve after that, they go to 1 hour the next year. In year three, it becomes a 5 minute radio summary.

Yes, yes they are.
We started to have this discussion before, and I made this comment to Chris then:
It's very hard to assess opportunity costs. Who knows how much money Hollywood *could* make if they weren't consistently pumping out self-indulgent ideologically saturated sludge that deliberately alienated at least half their potential audience?

The "self-indulgent ideologically saturated sludge that deliberately alienated at least half their potential audience" wins Oscars. They have to win Oscars to keep convincing themselves they're good artists and relevant. And while Hollywood does make money, not art the latest SuckTrack movie indicates you don't need to make a good movie to make plenty of money off of it.
I haven't cared about the Oscars since Parker-Stone got the shaft in favor of Phil Phucking Collins.
