Yesterday, a co-worker, whose car is in the shop, needed a ride to work, and since he lives pretty close I offered to pick him up on my way in. What he wasn't prepared for is the fact that I rarely listen to the radio while driving. I have an MP3 player with about 1200 songs on it, and they are all songs I like, which cannot be said for the available radio stations in the area.

During the 80+ minutes he was trapped in the truck, he heard tunes from John Prine, David Bromberg, Steve Goodman, Leo Kottke and Mason Williams, interspersed with AC/DC, Dropkick Murphys, Cruxshadow, and Flogging Molly.

Most of the trip was "Who the hell is that?" Followed by "I've never heard of him/them!"

Am I the only one who gets this type of question about his musical preferences?

Nope , but I am much older and people expect me to be obscure and a little bent.

You seem to have similar music tastes to me.

For some reason, The Pogues never came up. I thought I'd lost him at John Prine's "Illegal Smile".

The thing is, I'm an old fart. I grew up with the Stones, the Beatles, Pink Floyd. Most people under 30 probably don't even know Ozzie was in a band, they think it was always just Ozzie. Hell, try them on "Planet Caravan" sometime. Even the bands they would know, I tend to listen to the obscurities. Just because I happen to know that Creedence made more than two songs. Or Eric Clapton recorded more than just "Cocaine" and "Tears in Heaven." And I hardly EVER listen to anything less than about ten years old. I'm sorry, but a turntable is not an instrument, no matter how fast and hard you scratch that record. And autotune is for no-talent hacks who can't sing (with RARE exceptions). So I'll be playing something from the "old days" and I'll get the same reaction. I mean, how many people have even heard of "Medicine Jar" by Wings? Much less could identify the band from listening to it? Especially if they've been raised on "Britney and Whitney". Oh well, I have a bunch of stuff on my phone, and speakers on the back of my bench. I can hear good music whenever I want. But yeah, I know the feeling.

Considering one of my coworkers is a former drummer who toured with some very famous names?

Hell, he still owes me money for concert tickets.

I find whenever people start talking about the obscurity of their music tastes, there's a strong chance for it to turn into a more-obscure-than-thou contest, and that ends in hipsterdom.

The only thing that pisses me about hipsters is their self righteousness about it. Which is why they ruined PBR, beards and Brooklyn.

I'm pretty much a Country/Western kind of guy, although I admit I haven't listened to anything new in five years. The songs I think of as "new" are now playing on the oldies stations.

My lady had an -ex who listened to a lot of Pink Floyd, and I learned early on that if I want to tickle her aggravation button, I only need to put on a little Pink Floyd. It's fun watching her go into a hover.
