The Gun Counter

by Jay Allen. Has anyone read it? The books are similar to Marko's output, but in my opinion, not quite up to the same level. The first book, Marines, was good. The second one, The Cost Of Victory, is merely OK. I'm nearly done with it and am not sure I am going to continue on with the others.

The Books

The author creates a pretty fun universe to explore and through the series hits most of the highpoints of Military SF: battle between powers, revolt against a central authority, alien invasion, etc. Though a lot of these are common tropes in science fiction these days they are still fodder for good storylines. He also as seemed to have put a lot of thought into the military tech and tactics that his little universe possesses.
The main problem with the Crimson Worlds series in my opinion is that the characters are dull, dull, dull and about as a much fun to hang out with as your average Iranian mullah. The worst offender is ostensibly the main character of the series but by far the least interesting in a cast of mostly uninteresting characters. Also I have a problem with the worlds that these fantastic sci-fi battles are taking place on being reduced to plain, grey backdrops. You're on another planet man! Give us some details cause right now I am imagining a place that looks like Ohio with battle suits.
Overall the series is Ok, but nothing special. If you need new reading material and like Military SF it will probably work for you but don't be surprised if you lose interest every now and again.

Pretty much my thoughts, articulated better than I have been able to do, so far. Yeah, I'm going to finish this second book, but will probably go no further.
