As it turns out people are flocking to the History miniseries "The Bible" in home-video format too.

The miniseries, produced by "Survivor" boss Mark Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, did big business in its first week of home-video sales, setting a five-year record for DVD sales in the TV category and becoming the top-selling TV miniseries of all time in Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD....

I DVRed it and watched it. Pretty good series, although the actor who played Jesus seemed to be just reading his lines, I didn't find him too convincing.

I suspect many people, like me, pre-ordered it on Amazon.com. Probably over the last couple months. Then when the DVD was released all those orders were filled at once making it look like people were lined up around the block.
I haven't watched it yet, but I'm hearing bad things about it from some fundamentalist Christians. And, good things from some atheists.
I wonder what that means.

Given that I find many vocal "fundamentalists" are fucking idiots, with the theological background and "knowledge" of the bible roughly equivalent to a bad fantasy novel...

What he said, to which I will add their primary Theology is largely comprised of a combination of denominational doctrine combined with family/regional traditions that are almost more in line with superstition.

Ever heard the phrase "Divided by their common doctrine?" /heh/ Sort of akin to "Two Jews, three opinions."

Heh, I had to take two survey courses, Old Testament and New Testament. Nothing like a class full of evangelicals finding out what they don't know and what they thought they new wasn't so. For instance over half the class I was in ended up arguing that the Catholics did it right when they included the apocryphal books between the Old Testament and the New. The argument for them centered around that they gave a background that led to a better understanding of the New Testament. The other half said they already had to much material to cover as it was being that the Old Testament was already 3/4 of most of the protestant bibles.
In the Old Testament class I was talking with the ancient prof about being old among all the kids, He laughed and said that just the other day one of the girls came in for office hours to clear up a point and for some reason decided to show him her new belly button piercing, he thought it was pretty funny and said that after service in New Guinea and the rest of the Paciffic there wasn't much he hadn't seen when it came to piercings, brests, and tatts.
I kind of think Heinlein had a point that to understand English speaking culture you need to be familiar with the King James as a version of the bible as a work of literature since so many memes and sayings are sourced from it. I wish I could recommend a good study guide book or DVD for it.

It's mind boggling how your guys are able to determine the intellectual and academic background of fundamentalist Christians from a single sentence.

I guess it's part of that exceptional I.Q. I keep hearing about.

Yeah, that and (surprisingly) "Pilgrims Progress."

Can't find the quote just now but it's been said that one is not truly educated without having read the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress. I recollect reading that Pilgrim's Progress is second only to the Bible in terms of printing and distribution.

The funny thing is in Bunyan's notes long after, he said something to the effect that he never expected anyone to read it. He was writing in prison and was happy just to pass the time in doing so. I meant to visit the burial ground of the dissenters when I visited London but didn't research location well enough before going over and wasn't able to find it easily once I got over there.

Didn't sombody once say that if you are annoying people on both sides of any argument, you're probably doing about right? Would seem to apply here...

#1. Find a REALLY hardline southern Baptist, who insists that every single word of the Bible came straight from God's mouth.
#2. If they are male, make them read aloud part of the Bible to an unrelated attractive female, one-on-one. If female, they have to read aloud to an unrelated attractive young man, one-on-one.
#3. The part they have to read is Song of Solomon.
#4. Watch them squirm.........
