OGRE - Designer Edition

I saw this Thursday night on Schlock Mercenary:

Steve Jackson Games, makers of Munchkin is doing a Kickstarter project to release a special edition of the tabletop RPG, Ogre.
Ogre was the first game I ever designed. It came out in 1977! It’s been out of print for years, except for the miniatures rules. I’m constantly getting requests to bring it back, and in 2008 we started working on a new edition . . . a“designer’s edition” that would be as big and beautiful as any wargame you’ve ever seen.

Even as planned right now, the game is huge. The current prototype weighs 14 pounds! There are three huge maps - one 17" x 21" Ogre map and two geomorphic two-sided G.E.V./Shockwave maps. The hexes are 1.5" across, with counters to fit. And the Ogre and building counters are 3-D models made of heavy cardstock. There are already well over 15 square feet of chipboard in this game.

(Edit: Kickstarter has made the game even bigger. That's now four separate single-sided GEV-type maps, plus the original Ogre map, and several more sheets of counters and overlays. We're at about 20 square feet EACH of maps and counters/overlays.)
The Kickstarter project will end next Friday, May 11, 11:10 AM PDT. I've ordered mine.

I too, saw this yesterday on SH - I'd love to preorder, but I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on tabletop games when I haven't played any in.. awhile.

Never played Ogre, but I'm a big Illuminati fan.

Ogre is interesting, in that rather than have competing "armies", you have one super unit on one side, and an army of smaller, much less powerful vehicles on the other. It's a decidely uncommon gaming idea.

I've got the old G.E.V. game from SJG's predecessor. Mylar sleeve and all.

This Kickstarter is getting some press coverage. Inc. magazine is using it to illustrate the new ways companies are promoting and funding projects throught crowdfunding.

This article from "Geek News MTV" gives a good basic description of the game.

This is exciting to watch. As of this post there are 4,202 backers pledging $667,157 towards an original $20,000 goal. If they reach $700,000 before Friday, (which they are on track to do), they have committed to a similar Kickstart to re-release Carwars.

Next up should be Avalon Hill's Circus Maximus. Everyone takes a heavy chariot, and by the backstretch on the first lap it looks like Kursk. :D
