How Low Can You Go?

Post by Darrell »

Chris answered a comment I made at his blog, about his voice not sounding like I thought he would, with a another video post about his voice. That reminded me of an old Our Gang/Little Rascals episode, where one of the kids sang the song Asleep In The Deep, ending on a very low note. I thought it was Froggy, but turns out it was Chubby. I didn't find a youtube clip of it doing a quick search, but I did find this little gem--Asleep In The Deep, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft:

And here he is again, singing Headless Horseman:

That's rich. I can't hit those low notes like I used to.

I don't have the references right off the top of my head, but I seem to recall reading something about WHY our voices sound so much different to us than they do to others and it has something to do with the distortion caused by our skulls interfering with the sound waves prior to reaching our ear drums.

When presented of recordings of themselves, NOBODY sounds as they expected, and it can be quite shocking when hearing your voice the same way others do. MOST people recoil at hearing their voice for the first time when recorded and played back for them. They initially deny that is their voice even though EVERYONE else around them are telling/confirming THAT IS THEIR VOICE.

When we were kids, we used to have each other put on stereo headphones and play our favorite tunes into the headphones and sing along with the songs with the headphones on - WHILE ALSO BEING RECORDED ON TAPE. We had a LOT of fun with that - it was a blast, and to a person EVERYONE denied that was them on the recording, until something happened which identified them individually - such as a cough, sneeze, laugh, question-and-answer, etc, etc.

NOBODY sounds like they think they sound, and it can be hilarious at times if you want to mess with your friends using their own voices.
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

When I moved to Colorado, lo these many years ago, I thought I got rid of my hillbilly accent. When I've heard recordings of my voice, I was surprised how much of it I could still hear.

Not to mention that the Irish are the blacks of Europe, and the Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland.
