It's the culture, stupid.

Post by Scott Free »

Actually, this is about culture:
But a new report focusing on black males suggests that the picture is even bleaker than generally known.

Only 12 percent of black fourth-grade boys are proficient in reading, compared with 38 percent of white boys, and only 12 percent of black eighth-grade boys are proficient in math, compared with 44 percent of white boys.

Poverty alone does not seem to explain the differences: poor white boys do just as well as African-American boys who do not live in poverty, measured by whether they qualify for subsidized school lunches.

The data was distilled from highly respected national math and reading tests, known as the National Assessment for Educational Progress, which are given to students in fourth and eighth grades, most recently in 2009.
I don't know which is more chilling -- the statistics about the black boys or the white boys.
“What this clearly shows is that black males who are not eligible for free and reduced-price lunch are doing no better than white males who are poor,” said Michael Casserly, executive director of the council.

The report shows that black boys on average fall behind from their earliest years. Black mothers have a higher infant mortality rate and black children are twice as likely as whites to live in a home where no parent has a job. In high school, African-American boys drop out at nearly twice the rate of white boys, and their SAT scores are on average 104 points lower. In college, black men represented just 5 percent of students in 2008.
Wonder if that has anything to do with this little tidbit.
Seventy-two percent of black babies are born to unmarried mothers today, according to government statistics. This number is inseparable from the work of Carroll, an obstetrician who has dedicated her 40-year career to helping black women.

"The girls don't think they have to get married. I tell them children deserve a mama and a daddy. They really do," Carroll says from behind the desk of her office, which has cushioned pink-and-green armchairs, bars on the windows, and a wooden "LOVE" carving between two African figurines. Diamonds circle Carroll's ring finger.

As the issue of black unwed parenthood inches into public discourse, Carroll is among the few speaking boldly about it. And as a black woman who has brought thousands of babies into the world, who has sacrificed income to serve Houston's poor, Carroll is among the few whom black women will actually listen to.

"A mama can't give it all. And neither can a daddy, not by themselves," Carroll says. "Part of the reason is because you can only give that which you have. A mother cannot give all that a man can give. A truly involved father figure offers more fullness to a child's life."

Statistics show just what that fullness means. Children of unmarried mothers of any race are more likely to perform poorly in school, go to prison, use drugs, be poor as adults, and have their own children out of wedlock.

More than 40 years of debate

The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.

This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent.
The only thing even slightly amusing is the article's "excuses" for illegitimacy.

This is news? To the article's author: [sarcasm]Way to go out and really dig for the info![/sarcasm]

Edited: And, I don't write that to disparage black people in the least. I'm actually quite frustrated when I see anyone, but especially black people living these stereotypes when they have all the power to make different choices.

And *why* is that?

Gabor Mate's latest book, "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts", draws a compelling correlation between stress in early childhood (a human brain develops most rapidly during the first three years of life) and drug use (and hence prison and poverty in later life).

It's not so much the lack of a father than contributes to the above, but the behavior of the mother; lack of mother-child bond, instability and insecurity in the child's life, the mother's own self-centeredness hampering a loving and nurturing relationship with her child, etc.

I seen it broke down another way by father's that died vs fathers that left for whatever reason. Boys of fathers who died perform much closer to the boys with intact homes. Abandonment vs a hero to remember/emulate?
