I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Re: Whatcha reading redux.
An extremely dry, old style written book about a screwed up administration, Horse Guards and government but damn does it cover it in detail...I had it in hardcover, some 3rd, 4th or so printing and without question I had a true love/hate relationship with the book...I believe it took me a year and a half to finish it the first time and then must have read it four or five times after primarily for research.Rod wrote:I downloaded Kindle and Nook on my iPhone then went to Guttenberg Project to download free books out of copyright. I truly hope you'll enjoy it (especially since it's free) as I know I did; no, I didn't; yes, I did; well, maybe/kinda/sorta.

Re: Whatcha reading redux.
I had to go to the doctors this morn (0930) for some tests and meds...I arrived early and went to the coffee shop and book store before hand to fill up my mug since it takes about 1½ hrs to do all the crap they do to me so I'd have something to read and drink.
The store had these two books, oversized but not trade paperbacks in the clear out sale for $5.99 each so I bought them...The first is by Dominic Lieven titled "Russia Against Napoleon: The True Story of the Campaigns of War and Peace" (Pub 2009) that I started to read waiting and it's very well written and superbly researched.
Now, comes the rub! The second book by James Carroll (a former Paulist priest) titled "Constantine’s Sword: The Church and the Jews" (Pub 2002) basically the history of anti-Semitism leading up to Hitler and the Death Camps...I went down stairs afterwards to the coffee shop to get a refill and call someone to come and get me and I started reading it...Well long story short, three coffees and four and a half hours later with 342 (of 746) pages read I get kicked out of the café; get into severe deep doodoo as I've got people (very worried people) waiting for me to call them...I was totally, completely, engrossed in the book and after posting this I'm going back to reading it...Fascinating study by a Jesuit trained (Georgetown U) exceptional writer who brings amazing insight into a dark subject...I'm going back tomorrow and getting six more copies (called and reserved them) and mailing them to my oldest daughters and two brothers…I can not express how good, how moving, how well done this book is… Was a NY Times bestseller and was made into a documentary of the same name (which I never heard about until now)…Without even knowing the ending I’ll say this is a must read book for Christians and Jews.

Re: Whatcha reading redux.
Finished Fate of Worlds by Niven and the other guy (Lerner in this case). Meh. I've read all the 'XX of Worlds' books mainly for completeness, but the Known Space stories have gotten a lot less fun over time.

Slammed through MHL Wednesday night and I am still paying for it. I enjoyed it, but maybe not quite as much as the previous books.
