Saw it tonight with a friend...very funny, very worth seeing, but I felt the ending left something to be desired. I'd still go see it for sure. Eastwood does a realy great job as a curmodgeny old war vet. Also, makes me want a Garand.

Saw it over the weekend, GREAT movie. Should be an Oscar contender, but probably won't be because it's not PC enough.

From what I saw in the trailer, there was a grumpy guy who told the punk kids to "get off my lawn" while pointing an M1 Garand at them. He also seemed to grumble a lot, and at pretty much everything. Frankly, I am honored to be the inspiration for a character in a movie, and want to go see this ASAP.
Furthermore, the following line, and adaptations thereof have now become acceptable aspects of M1 operation:
"This is the M1 Garand automatic rifle, and it will blow your head clean off. Now I know what you are thinking, did I fire 7 shots or 8? To tell you the truth, I kinda lost track, so what you got to ask yourself is, are you feeling lucky? Well do ya, punk?"
and yes, I know that the eight shot out of a Garand makes a distinct sound, allow me my artistic license here.

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

I'm looking forward to what you have to say about the movie.drice wrote:I don't think I've seen an Eastwood movie that I would consider to be an all around good movie. The dialogue almost always leaves something to be desired, the plot lines usually suck, or are not properly developed. The rest of the cast isn't up to snuff with him, or their lines are terrible.
Also, I really haven't been pleased with one single flick that he's directed...although I've seen them all.
That being said, I think he does well coming across as a badass, and he has great presence on screen. And...I watch less-than-stellar movies all the time, so I plan on seeing this one as well, I just don't have any illusions that it will be a great movie. If I did, I'm sure I will come away disappointed.

Still doesn't work. The M1 locks open after ejecting the clip. Hard to not notice the bolt is back and the action open.randy wrote:Fixed it for yaesa5444 wrote:"This is the M1 Garand automatic rifle, and it will blow your head clean off. Actually, I would imagine it would be kinda hard to notice that the bolt and op-rod handle are back. When you shoot it, your eye is aligned with and looking through the peep sight, so you can't see the bolt or op-rod. I suppose if you shot it left-handed, you would notice. Automatic pistols lock back as well, and much more noticeably than an M1, and a lot of people don't realize it until they pull the trigger and it doesn't fire.
Of course, with the M1, the ejection of the clip is very noticeable. From experience, you can very easily hear it even after being deafened by emptying the magazine without hearing protection ( I know, bad idea, I did this once to see what it would do), and very easily with hearing protection on. On top of that, you can generally see the clip being ejected, and if my M1 is representative, it will frequently land on your head. I actually like the ping, not only is it character, but it also a very clear message that you are out of ammo.

Only that your GUN is out of ammo, but how ling does it take to slam in a fully-loaded clip of M1 ammo and have it ready to go again?? Huh, punk? Are you feeling LUCKY???esa5444 wrote:I actually like the ping, not only is it character, but it also a very clear message that you are out of ammo.

It is? Never had the problem myself. The op-rod's positional difference between a charged chamber and a locked back bolt is what .... 3 inches? Hard to miss, IMHO.esa5444 wrote:Actually, I would imagine it would be kinda hard to notice that the bolt and op-rod handle are back.

Except of course when you're looking at the rifle more or less in line with the business end from a relatively short distance and there's 16" of pointy steel that rather attracts your attention...FelixEstrella wrote:...The op-rod's positional difference between a charged chamber and a locked back bolt is what .... 3 inches? I know its not in that movie scene but it SHOULD have been ; )
