Yeah, nostalgia is powerful. I was born in 1972. The first cars I can remember us owning are my dad's 1970 F-150 truck and my mom's 1969 Pontiac LeMans. Over my first ten years, that changed to a 1974 LTD (best family car we ever owned), a 1972 Plymouth Valiant, and a 1978 Ranger. My first car was a hand-me down from my brother. In 1988, he gave me his 1978 Dodge Magnum. Lemon yellow with leather seats and all the options. As a nearly 6 footer, I could lay down in the back seat without my head or feet touching the sides...that never came in handy as a teenager, or anything.
So, yeah, especially towards the end of the decade many of the cars were shiite. Nostalgia for one's early years is still a powerful thing, though, and I just like 70's cars. Virtually ALL of them, even the Mustang II.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

Here's a little secret - one of the things streetracers look for when looking to setup a race for money, is to look at the rear quarters of the other guys car - fast brutal cars tend to "ripple" the sheetmetal.
Darts are kinda light - which is why they were favorites for turning into track cars. Mopar went even further with the factory cars, acid dipping the bodies to remove even more weight.

HTRN, I would tell you that you are an evil fucker, but you probably get that a lot ~ Netpackrat
Describing what HTRN does as "antics" is like describing the wreck of the Titanic as "a minor boating incident" ~ First Shirt
Since we're going for the seventies I would love to have back my '71 SS Camaro. 4 bolt 350 block with a large journal steel 327 crank, forged rods and TRW flat tops. Angle milled and ported a set of LT-1 (original, as in '70 Z-28) heads with Isky roller rockers. Solid lifter cam that made the engine idle like a paint mixer. Full length headers feeding 3" Stainlessworks chambered mufflers with dumps just to screw with the neighbors. Trans was a full manual reverse valve body TH350 with a brake and 3500 converter. Had a factory 12 bolt that I swapped 4.10s into spinning Weld draglites and BFG Radial TAs. When the loud pedal hit the floor board atmospheric pressure shove cubic feet of air through a 750 Holly carb and single plain intake.
Funny thing is before I got my license I wanted a stock jeep CJ or YJ but my father would have none of that because of sensationalized stories of them flipping easily. Instead he let his only son buy a Camaro that could more than double the speed limit (and that was before I got my hands under the hood). I hear people talk about how they are amazed they survived their drugs/alcohol/fighting (add vice of choice) but my friends and I are amazed we survived the cars we owned. All '70s muscle from second gen F bodies and cobrajet powered mustangs to an AMC Eagle with a 401 javelin motor in it.
Starting in the early 70's, the old worn out Dodge police cars started coming on the city auction blocks, Belvederes, Polaras, other I can't recall. Not real sexy looking rides but under the hood would be a 440 Police Interceptor engine.

One of my classmates bought a '71 Satellite with a 383 that was supposedly an interceptor. It had some legs, for sure. Like you said, nothing fancy - heavy duty vinyl bench seat, column shifter, original AM radio only, but he slapped some headers, air shocks, rear lift kit and some wheels and tires on it, and voila, a decent street cruiser for a high school kid. I got a warning ticket in it from the local constabulary.
A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

The '71 Challenger sitting in my garage (even though its still incomplete); first car I bought, and fortune willing the last car I'll still have when I kick off. There are other early '70s that I like, but this one is mine.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
