I recall reading how he and George Lindsey (Goober Pyle from the Andy Griffith Show) once got into a fist fight over who was the better actor. But I won't speak ill of the (long) dead.
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
