Meh, never got what was the fuss with Floyd. The Stones were the kind of group who you get (well, at least some of their tunes) later on, but not immediately.

Chris,
Everything you said is true.....but...
Dude, the 80's ROCKED with music.
AC/DC, Molly Hatchet, Van Halen, Kansas, Journey, Def Leopard, Phil Collins, ELO, etc.....
And let's not forget that smokin' hot piece of Brit ass, Samantha Fox.

Well, unfortunately, the Billboard charts are all we have, but they were, and are, about as accurate as the Neilsen ratings.
(By which I mean they are heavily industry-"cooked", largely subjective, and in no way objectively reliable.)
They are to reality as Plato's shadows on a cave wall.
So let's remember to apply Sturgeon's Law to the ratings themselves.

I've always heard it expressed as 90%CByrneIV wrote:Sturgeons law ALWAYS wins... At any given time, for any given field of human endeavour, 99% of everything is crap.
But am willing to accept the modification for areas such as politicians and pop culture.

RE: "Dark Side"
What I tell the kids: Until your band's album has been on the Billboard Top 200 for a year, they're just a flash in the pan. MY favorite band/album, just a little over FOURTEEN years. I like some of their other stuff just as much, "Meddle" and "Wish You Were Here," for example, and "Coming Back to Life" is one of my favorite songs of all time. But nobody else can hold a candle to "Dark Side." YMMV

Motorhead, Manowar, Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Overkill, Dio, Nuclear Assault, and the list goes on and on and on my friends..Termite wrote: Dude, the 80's ROCKED with music.

Rock may have achieved perfection in 1974, but Metal surpassed it in 89.

The 80's also produced the likes of Joy Division/New Order, Pixies, Killing Joke, Chameleons, etc etcHTRN wrote:Motorhead, Manowar, Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Overkill, Dio, Nuclear Assault, and the list goes on and on and on my friends..Termite wrote: Dude, the 80's ROCKED with music.

There was also some stuff going on in Brooklyn and the Bronx, that's become pretty popular.
It's almost like everything being made now that doesn't suck is just a continuation of something from the 80's.

Part of it may be the current transition in music - the "loudness war" has crushed the ability to worry about sound, and most of the more creative musicians are recording in some garage somewhere - which precludes the involvement of the professionals, and the depth it takes to create some types of music.
EG, Katy Perry's "Roar" is not a great piece of music, but it is "polished" and fleshed out. Its still sounds over-processed and sounds terrible, but I think that might be either the loudness war, or trying to hide Perry's voice - not sure if she can actually sing, or not.

Sorry, I can't seem to locate anything of which you speak.Greg wrote:It's almost like everything being made now that doesn't suck is just a continuation of something from the 80's.
I can't find any proof that music as it's commonly understood didn't die circa 1990.
Right around the time music executives decided that census be damned, the entire population of the country must be illiterate crack fiends living in a racially monochromatic housing project.
