In other words, she's flavor of the month for the Music Industry Machine. Two years from now, it will be some other pretty twenty something singing inane songs about inane things, probably written by staff songwriters. The only reason why we still hear anything about the likes of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson is because their personal lives imploded, and made the news. This is why I admire Lady Gaga, despite her music not being to my tastes - she understands the music industry better than any pop performer since Madonna, and is using every trick in the book to her advantage.

Frankly, the new bands I've been listening to(at least, new to me :D ), I've come across not through traditional music promotional methods - Airbourne I found when I started listening to last.fm, Lordi I came across because of their Eurovision win went viral online, and Alestorm, well, I can't remember where I first heard of them, but who doesn't love a metal band that sings about Pirates?

Now the video is reported in our local rag:
Katy Perry video filmed at Camp Pendleton
Video features Marines from the base; Perry says she ate MREs

Something looks familiar in Katy Perry’s new military-themed music video, “Part of Me.”

Yes, those beaches are San Diego County beaches. The video was filmed at Camp Pendleton in February, and Marines from the base appear in the footage.

It shows Perry taking part in an amphibious assault, running the obstacle course and patrolling with body armor, combat boots and an M-16.

In the video, she dumps her cheating boyfriend, then enlists after seeing a bumper sticker that says “All Women Are Created Equal, Then Some Become Marines.” (YouTube video linked).

“This feels like one of the most aggressive songs I've ever put out," she said in an interview with MTV News. "It's an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I possibly could.”

Perry said no actors were used in the video, only Marines.

“For three days, I was like a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult," Perry said.

"I learned how to flip someone. I learned how to flip them on their back. I learned how to wrestle underwater," she said.

Despite feeling sore and exhausted and eating meals-ready-to-eat, Perry reports: “The Marines were so lovely to us.”

Yeah, we had some good laughs about it at work. Some of the female Marines were betting that it may boost recruitment.

Pandora. Got to get you a Pandora account. With one exception, every bit of music I've newly discovered since I stopped listening to the radio just over 10 years ago, has been through Pandora.

Pandora has been the best thing ever for trips to the gym. Cardio time will never be the same again.

Of course my daughter keeps getting to my smartphone and leaving it to restart on the Christine Aguilara channel...

Hence my listening to last.fm - I tried Slacker Radio, and what it played for the tryout was not to my tastes (seriously - I wanna to listen to John Lee Hooker, don't give me modern "blues" artists  ) Last.FM didn't require a signup for constant listening, didn't limit the skips(although I find myself skipping alot less with them), and generally was less of nuiscance.

Currently listening to Jag Panzer - found them looking for covers of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"

Doesn't compute. Not sure how anything related to last.fm can be less of a nuisance than anything. Far as I can tell, their site is actually made of nuisance. The one thing they were good for is ISTR you used to be able to get a limited number of full plays of any specific song, but that seems to have gone away.

Maybe I'll see if I can actually get them to play some music for me. I have some time on my hands at work today....

Edit: Pandora is free. This is not.

Click on radio on Last.fms front page. You'll get a black dialog box. type in a name of a band you want to listen to. It will start up a radio "station" where it plays that band, and bands like it.

No sign ups. No limits on music. No limits on skips. All you have to do is push a "yes, I'm still listening" button that pops up every six songs or so.

Pandora and Slacker both require signups after a brief tryout. Pandora limits you to 40 hours a month. Both limit the number of songs that you can skip per hour, and in some cases, per day. Neither did as good a job at picking other bands as Last.fm - When I listen to Motorheads channel, I don't want to hear Poison.

You know that Pandora remembers what you tell it you like and don't like, don't you? The longer you listen, the better the music it plays for you gets. Which is actually the whole point....
