Not sure from the video I saw if that means you get to fight with deployed regiments, or if that means you can have named leaders WITHIN a division, such as colonels. I have read stuff that says if is the uber of the genre, and others that cry that they dumbed it down. Just have to see it for myself.
You had to remind me. I have HoI2, and have never had time to really play it. I still don't, but now I'm tempted to try. And now as of this week there's a *3*?!? Grrrr.

Hehe, which time waster to play? Decisions, decisions.

I just hope the Japanese fare better in this version. You usually have to cheat a lot to fix the Japanese so they can build a good enough military to put up a fight. It is also usually the only way they'll take China as a computer player. Otherwise, they don't beat China, and swiftly lose their navy when a computer controlled America gets into it.

Most games I start, I use the cheats right at the start to increase the industrial capabililty of a number of countries, allied and axis.

The one I've messed with lately, on HOI 1. Is the Germans. I went with no pesky allies and just invaded them and annexed them instead. Can't annex Italy due to their colonies being unreachable at this time, mid-to-late 42. But at least this time they didn't declare war on Russia while all my divisions were still in France. And their navy, parked in Sicily, has really gained my naval bombers and bomber commanders lots of experience.

Heh, the worry though is all those British and American divisions parked in the Med, sooner or later the computer is going to do something with them and right now ALL my strong, mobile forces are at the Eastern front. I need to build up a real reserve in France, Germany, and Italy, while at the same time I need more troops in the East if I am to take those nice oil fields, which I really need to take.

As for the Honorverse, sure I'll be checking that out when it is ready to be checked out. They're still working on it, last time I looked.

In HOI2, to keep the US off of your back, you need a lot of carriers. What I do to get a lot of carriers is to cheat (with the sliders). ;)

What I do is to use event 1013 to up the industry in Japan by about 50% right at the start, and then give them a nice pile of resources and manpower to work with. In the USA game, this means in 1942, China is a Japanese puppet and I have a shoestring army in India and Burma, trying to help the British out. While at sea, the Japs have Midway and rather more Carriers than they had in the real war. And the computer is so far fighting me with huge fleets of 30+ units at a time under good Admirals, which is how I lost Midway to invasion.

In the USA game as well, I boosted industry in most of the countries Germany will take or ally with by about 10% and Germany itself by 20%. What you do is right at the start, before even doing anything with your chosen country. Do a lot of saves and picking countries. Go in and build more industry in places like Holland, France, and Belguim. Esp. places the Germans can annex, like Norway. Or allies like Romania. I forced Austria to add 4-5 more ICs to its industries so the Germans will get that increased building ability. Things like that.

By 1943, the German army is huge, heading for 400 divisions and very experienced. And I have about 60 US divisions fighting in Greece, edging into Yugoslavia, grinding its way to having a few generals with decent skills to promote to Corps commanders and start building good infantry and armor Corps (Led by MacArthur and Eisenhower.) They would have been fighting in Italy, but when I invaded Sicily, Italy split into two countries and their whole military were suddenly my pals. And I was really looking forward to sinking the Italian Navy. Mussolini kept the north, with no divisions, and is so far still neutral. My new italian buddies kept Greece (they annexed it in 1940) so I am helping them by training my army there.

To contrast, in my German game, where I didn't boost the Japs. While they are fighting Russia (a real help to me) and own Vladivostock. I wonder how they will get more troops moved in from the home islands since in mid-late 42 the Japanese Imperial Navy is 1 light cruiser, a couple of destroyer flotillas, and a single transport ship unit that can only carry one division at a time. And the Americans have 19 carriers.. and the naval base at Truk. (But only half their battleships, they sent the rest to the north atlantic, where the Kriegsmarine sank them). Yes, the Bismark sank the Alabama.

However I am now in a race for time. I am using more oil than I am producing. I have to take the Russian oil fields to fix that. I am winning well, but I may or may not be destroying Russian divisions fast enough. And sooner or later the hundred or so US and British divisions sitting around in the Med and England are going to invade something and right now I don't have the forces to stop them if the garrison divisions I've parked on every beachfront province fail to hold the beach. I have new divisions coming into the game over the next several months to form the reserve armies. But the computer allies might not give me that time and if I have to pull units out of Russia to fight in the West, I'l probably lose the war.
