Well, the name started as a typo in a magazine article about science fiction folk music, and kind of stuck. As for genres within it, it's now pretty much anything you can think of, with a sci-fi theme to it.

He's also been a filksinger for about 30 years, and he has a song called "a fire in the sky", that is absolutely great, as a totally serious folk style song, about manned spaceflight.
Now that is VERY good stuff. I still can't appreciate the musical style, but I definitely feel the same way about manned spaceflight as he does.
Maybe if I win the lottery I could hire a band and get it re-recorded as psychedelic rock instead ;)

One advantage of using the folk genre is that you can get away with just an acoustic guitar and an unamplified voice. Much easier to lug to a convention than, say, two electric guitars, electric bass, keyboards (both the "tree fort" and the portable one), trumpet, trombone, drum kit, wireless mikes, theremin, amps, lights, video projector, and the computer system that runs the animated robot drummer that our local geek-rock band brings with them for their smaller sets.

Actually I heard it from the guy doing the mastering, not Les. Last time I saw Leslie was at her wedding. She called me the night before and asked me to play guitar at the wedding.

I have been hankering to put together a band consisting of guitar, upright or acoustic bass (that'd be me, once I settle on one or t'other), fiddle, accordion, and drums (snare, kick, & brushes) to do mostly Celtic/Band/Byrds (Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era)/Nitty Gritty Dirt Band/Commander Cody/Clifton Chenier sorts of things. Mostly.

"Interesting" is a good descriptor. Pictures up on my Photobucket account. My wife took the Photos:

She was a bit distracted by our 5-year old son during the actual ceremony, so most of the photo's are of the setup.
