Waterlogged electronics and rice

Post by Weetabix »

I had a pretty good wall charger cube that got left in some pocket and went through the washer.

Took it to the sink and filled and rinsed, filled and rinsed to make sure the soap was out. Then I put it in a tupperware container of rice for several days.

Now it's charging again.

I'd heard that trick for cell phones that got dunked, so I thought I'd try it.

Since it wasn't an abject failure, I thought I'd share the trick for general edification.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Works the other way around too, if your rice gets damp and looks like it's just about to turn moldy then stick it in a box of cellphones

Like a reversible reaction in chemistry or a principle of thermodynamics.

Trust Highspeed to take the discussion over everyone's heads. ;)

We had an electronics incident today, her laptop battery had a ' thermal runaway anomaly '.
I put the thing in our outdoor paella\pizza\barbecue oven when it refused to stop melting even when removed from the laptop, it can burn and\or explode all it likes out there...

Most electronics will only be harmed by water if there is power through them when the water hits and it causes a short. Quite often, the rice trick works very well to dry them out.

I used the rice trick successfully on my Sony Reader about 4 years ago.

The way I understand it is you put the electronic in the rice and leave it overnight. Tiny Japanese electronic experts swarm into the rice and fix it then disappear before dawn.

Did the same thing here, too, with a cellphone. The Rice trick worked.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

We will find out if it works with the digital recorder we just bought when I get home.

Of course, a gun case dehumidifier would work too, but not everyone has those lying around...
