Borepatch had an interesting and erudite post on Firefox's descent from the high road: http://borepatch.blogspot.com/2014/05/b ... -wife.html
I'm not sure what DRM does to me, but I'm willing to believe Borepatch. He suggests Opera as a good alternative. Others have recommended Pale Moon.
What do you guys think?

What's the plan ? - to make watching video and listening to music through your browser the new standard ?
I can't get my head round what they are trying to achieve - someone will find a way to strip the DRM from the content and convert it into avi's and MP3's or similar formats that can be shared, probably within about a week of the system going live.
It'll be a complete waste of time, money and effort.
Am I missing something ?
I only use Firefox because I'm used to it from long experience. I did try Chrome but I download a lot of pdf files and it kept nagging me that " this file may harm your computer " until I got fed up and shitcanned the stupid nannying bitch. Maybe it doesn't do that any more.

That's what I'm asking, too. I don't know what it does, so I don't know if it hurts me. I'm also kind of a fan of the Davids in the fights against Goliaths, so I might just switch for that reason.Highspeed wrote:Am I missing something ?
Same for me. I like it much better than IE and it's more secure. But just because I'm used to it doesn't mean it's the best thing for me.I only use Firefox because I'm used to it from long experience.

90% of the consumers of the technology will not circumvent it.

As is so often the case... I don't know what you mean. But as usual, it sounds deep and dark.Yogimus wrote:90% of the consumers of the technology will not circumvent it.

I switch back and forth between Firefox and Google Chrome.Weetabix wrote:That's what I'm asking, too. I don't know what it does, so I don't know if it hurts me. There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

Yogi means that the average Firefox-with-DRM user won't install a tool to remove the DRM from video and music files because that's geek stuff.Weetabix wrote:As is so often the case... I think he's absolutely right.
But of the people who DO install that kind of DRM removal tool a proportion of them will upload the now DRM free files to the Piratebay, where the non geeky can download them using a torrent client.

I'm kind of ambivalent ( I might be biker scum, but I know long wordsWeetabix wrote:I love the spirit of the resistance.

I don't agree with the " everything should be free " attitude of some of these file sharing " activists " but then the RIAA and the PRS ( in the UK ) behave like the Mafia.
My mate in the UK owns a pub and if he plays a music station on the radio where customers can hear it the PRS are entitled to shake him down for a license to do so. I don't see any difference between that and Joey " Fingers " Gambini coming in and saying " Hey, nice bar you got here, be a real shame if anything happened to it "
It's a legitimised protection racket. Plus you probably get better customer service from the Mafia.
The record companies and movie industry are just dinosaurs. They don't seem to comprehend that Pandora's Box has been opened and nothing they can do will ever put things back to the way they used to be. They have to change their business model, how I don't know, but it's not like they aren't short of money to hire people with bright ideas.

You're as good as anyone here, brother. You can spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard.Highspeed wrote:I'm kind of ambivalent ( I might be biker scum, but I know long words)
I share your ambivalence. I get around it by buying CD's and DVD's used and only buying new if I really like something.about the whole intellectual property thing. In a lot of ways file sharing is stealing.

They're supposed to be creative. They should offer more value.I don't agree with the " everything should be free " attitude of some of these file sharing " activists " but then the RIAA and the PRS ( in the UK ) behave like the Mafia.
