Powerstroke how is the 6.4

Post by NVGdude »

So I know everyone says to avoid the 6.0 like the plague. Others say that all of the problems were in the first two years so the 06 and 07 are ok.

What sayeth the hive about the 6.4? Is the mileage as bad as everyone says?

Ouch. You can actually get better MPG with the aged Triton 5.4.

I checked Fuely.

Owners are showing between 13 and 14 for the 6.4, somewhat better for the 6.0 and several MPG better for the old 7.3.

They are also showing 12-13 for the Triton 5.4.

So 20% better mpg, and diesel is exactly 20% more than gas today. Hmmn that's not suspicious at all.

So, not worth it for the diesel since the 5.4 can tow a horse trailer just fine, even with that huge thoroughbred the wife has. Major draw of the 250 is you can get a crew cab with a decent size bed. Don't need 8" but long enough to actually lay down in is an important consideration.

So, probably ought to get her another Expedition and just keep the F-150 around as a hay truck till it finally dies, or I shoot it out of frustration.

I think I had one of those - it was around that era. I got about 12, w a crew can short bed F250. It was a good truck once we installed an aftermarket... Damper? Can't remember the term but it was a shock in the front suspension. The stock one was undersized.

Comfortable truck.

As much as I prefer the ride/economy of my Jetta - and the handiness of my FJ... I miss having a pickup... Even if I have no use for one, at all, anymore... (I might really miss the ranch that went along with driving a 3/4 ton truck everyday...)

If it matters you can safely store diesel fuel much more safely and for longer periods, if you want to keep a quantity on hand.

DI gas engines, which are starting to come on the market, are going to kill Diesels, at least in anything other than a Medium Truck. They won't cost an extra 3-7K, will get 80% or better of the fuel and power advantage of Diesels, and they won't have the EPA bullshit to deal with(for the Manufacturers).

Mazda is coming out with an 14:1 compression GDI. They are supposedly releasing an HCCI engine next. if they can get that to work they may just pass diesel efficiency.

There's got to be some people at International enjoying watching Ford flounder trying to build their own diesel engines.

As far as I can tell, the actual ENGINES are fine. (other than the self destructing 6.0). The issue is the Diesel Particle Filter that chokes the life out of them. Obviously a V-8 is never going to be as strong or well balanced as an I-6.

Reminds my of my Grandmothers old Chevy Nova. 1976 and the first year they put Smog pumps on them. Generated just about one half the horsepower of the previous year's model.
