mykolab?/encryption

Would this be of any worth?
The idea of a company owning my contacts list and email content is disturbing.
OK, so mykolab seems fairly seamless. I will be working on switching the company over to it.
Now, any particular hints on encryption? Admittedly, I'm far from the most tech savvy, but I will be getting everyone over to an encrypted system...
Part of me is tempted to switch over to linux and open source programs, as Soros has entered the dairy market - but that might be a bit too paranoid...
