True, but that's what life is about, taking risks. They knew what they were doing, they took a calculated risk, and they got away with it. Very cool.
In my younger days, there was this one military (UH-1) pilot, we called him Rocky (the flying squirrel) who had a disturbing propensity for bending helicopters, but you could always count on Rocky to be there where you needed him.

It's just a whole lot of risk operating down IN the trees (note how the instructor kept having his student check that the tail rotor was still clear), in order to retrieve a model airplane. I think it was a superlative feat of airmanship; I just question the judgement involved in deciding the risk was worthwhile.

In a situation like that, you don't have much to work with if something goes wrong.
