Piper Cherokee Six?
Anyone know anything about these? A friend is looking at buying one.

Just remember what Chris means by "in depth", and take a leak, get a fresh beverage and a comfy chair.

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

What's your friend's region and expected use?

I don't really know, exactly, but charter work, I think. (Y'all know about planes, I do not, so the conversations don't much go beyond "I'm thinking about getting a plane. Oh, which one? A Piper Cherokee Six", and knowing that the friend is planning on becoming a private pilot to do charters.
And, then looking them up, seeing that they are fairly reasonable, and being tempted by how much nicer it would be to fly back to the ranch, w. my guns and a dog, than drive...

She's getting her commercial license - I'm sure someone's going over the regs, etc with her.
Any thoughts on mileage/maintenance/good models/years/etc?

It's the "short-wheel base minivan" of light single-engine 6 place airplanes.
Is she going to be operating under Part 91 or Part 135 of the FARs?

How many people does it really hold? (Er, my size people - although "my size" is now down to 270, but still 6'4".) Well, and some small, female people...

That is not precisely correct. If you take your friend flying, he can share the costs of operating the aircraft, but he can't cover them entirely. Total of all costs listed divided by number of occupants to get each person's share. If the private pilot's share of the cost of the flight is being paid by someone else, that is operation for compensation or hire, per the FAA.CByrneIV wrote:You can rent your airplane out as an individual without them, but you cant be paid to fly, nor may you take passengers for fare or hire.
You can only be compensated for actualexpenses incurred in otherwise lawful operations.
For example, if a friend wants to fly somewhere, you can fly him, and he can pay you for the fuel, maintenance, operating costs, and your meals and hotel bill... but not for your time.
Granted, I realize that in the real world that's not generally how it is done; if you ask your pilot buddy to take you flying, you buy the fuel. But it's important to note the strict legalities when discussing with the unaware, because people have gotten violated by the FAA over this. Just know that you shouldn't talk about whatever arrangement you have with your pilot buddies for covering their costs, because it might fall upon the wrong ears.

The IA should cover him for signing off the inspection on pretty much any STC for light aircraft... No additional certification required. Unless there is something funky in the STC that calls out a particular process specification, like a welding spec, or an NDT spec (all the engine overhaul shops had to get NDT certifications through the organizations for the NDT industry after the engine manufacturers started calling out their specs in their service bulletins).CByrneIV wrote:Also my FIL is an A&P-IA who is certified for most STC's on them, so I can get even more depth if you want.
Saw an STC once that called out for the work to be done by a "certified welder"... Which meant nothing whatsoever, without calling out an applicable industry spec, since the FAA doesn't have or require specific certification for aircraft welders. It's just another skill that is covered by the basic mechanic and IA certificates. Even if you don't have the skill, as a mechanic, you're trained to inspect the finished product, so if you have to farm out that work, it is legally almost as though you welded it yourself.
