A scientific approach to cover crops

I have to look into it more, but if the program in North Dakota is permitting a crop, on 12" of rain w. no irrigation, its quite impressive. (Of course, much of that is going to be snow based, which does concentrate the moisture, and is high in nitrogen - which is why our old ranch in MT was productive w. 18"/year.)

I just watched the first one, and it raises some interesting points. I was reading about growing garlic the other day, and one of the things mentioned is that garlic is a heavy nitrogen feeder. putting a cover crop of legumes like clover or vetch right after harvest, then rolling it flat right before the November planting, would mean less fertilzer, choking out the weeds, provide mulch to protect from very low winter temps and retain water in the summer...
