Credit card Processing

Post by Rumpshot »

Walking by an endcap at Target today. The card scanner by Square caught my eye. It was $9.99 with a $10.00 rebate. Further looking at the website brought me this info:
How much does Square cost?
We believe in making it easy for you to accept payments, so you can focus on the things that matter. The Square app and card reader are 100% free.

What are the fees?

Our fees are simply 2.75% per swipe.

Every payment card we accept (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover) has the same flat rate. As our fees are taken out of each payment as they occur, there is no fee schedule. Square does not require a contract upon signup or have any monthly minimums. It doesn't cost you anything if you don't use it. If you type in the card information manually, our fee is 3.5% + 15¢.

Note that this fee is taken off the total amount processed, including tax and tip.

It works with Apple devices (our Ipad could go to work) and Android devices. I have two such devices and could use them in the store and on the road. Apps are free for both.

I know the per transaction fee is a bit higher than many merchant accounts, but there are no other fees.

I will loose my current credit card machine soon (Dec 31st it will not be supported by my current merchant account) and I am looking for a new merchant account or system. This looks very promising.

Chris do you have any input on this system? Anyone else?

I gave up on taking credit cards a long time ago. 3% on a $50,000 kitchen renovation is $1500. Some guys I know offer a "cash discount". But it's really just their regular price. Their quoted price is ~3% higher. See also: Gunbroker.com

But for a business that deals in smaller purchases, you pretty much have to take CCs. A lot of my buddies are very happy with Costco's service.

Thanks guys. I will pick up a reader today and get it started. Really not happy with the merchant account I do have.

Next step is to teach my Ipad2 to print to the wireless HP printer so we can print reciepts.
