Skyrim Killed my PS3

It did. I have the Red Blink of Death. But damn that game is good.
So begins my saga of trying to salvage my HD to a new system. So I have read on the interweb that I can't just swap the old HD into a new system (it will be forced to reformat it). So I came upon an option of using HD housing and then transferring that data to the new HD, just like a back up. Anyone know if there are any problems with this?

I haven't done it with a console, but have done the same thing with PC's of various speeds and manufacturers. I suggest an external enclosure from Newegg, unless you [strike]want[/strike] need it right away. You can get a top-rated enclosure for under $30, usually with nominal (or even NO) shipping charges. Otherwise, you'll pay twice that for the same thing right across the street. I can actually buy cables from computergate.com in California, pay for two day shipping, and it's less expensive than going to Best Buy right up the street.
On a related note, the truck of happiness just left my RAM upgrade. I'm now the proud owner of 16GB of RAM. It went in with no problems, is recognized and running like a champ.

Is it something with the file type or format, or maybe you just got a bad enclosure?

Windows will not recognize that disk, it is formatted in a format that Windows does not know and is not familiar with. That the PS3 Does not see it tells me the disk may be bad, in all likelihood you have lost what is on there... You may actually be able to use the disk once you kill the partitions on it but that is a toss up.

I used a flash drive, and it was picked up by the PS3. When I used the housing, it just didn't register. I plugged it into my laptop, and it came up fine there. Only problem was that none of the files were present. I assume that is because it is a different format (FATA, I think). I tried it also with the old PS3 HD ( I upgraded a few months ago from a 60g to 500g) with the same result.
I do not want to start Skyrim again, I just got past the lean phase of the game (having to sell everything for coin, low level, etc).
<sigh>
