LOL. Yeah, my daughter's were all up in arms when I told them I was looking for a Beetle, "Daaaaaad, that's a chick car."

Diesel, gun-metal gray, rims, surf racks, close to 40hp over stock w/out any mpg penalty. Yeah, I got yer girl car right here.

I drove a Beetle for several years, great little car, wonderful in the snow of Kentucky, great gas mileage, an engine anyone could work on, and .... well, I bought it for $500.00, drove it for three years and sold it for $500.00 when I shipped out.

Then, got to Louisiana and several years later, bought two more ('69 and '71) as project cars for two of my sons. Got them running, and the boys drove them through high school. Sold them when the boys left home.

Snicker if you must, but if a good clean VW Bug showed up locally, I'd be hard pressed to not make an offer on it. Great gas mileage, easy maintenance, they were truly wonderful little cars.

I bought a 1975 Ford Escort for £15 in about 1990, drove it around with no tax, vehicle inspection ( MoT ) or insurance for around 6 months until it got too hot to handle and the local cops knew it too well. Then I sold it to a scrapyard for £25

I think they were referring to the ugly 'new' water cooled beetle with the dashboard bud vase, not the ugly old air cooled ones.

yup, have had both old and new Beetles as well as Types I (splittie), III (fastback) and a waterboxer/brick. Never been a VW I wouldn't own 'cept for that (g)awful Audi Fox hiding under a VW badge. I'd even take a look at a Dasher if there were still any alive -- esp if it was a diesel.


The new Beetle's front seating is the raison d'etre for me getting one. That was critical after my back surgery in when I went shopping. I've but over 150K on it since buying it used in Feb '96. A daily driver has to have the high fuel economy with my commute and regular runs up to OC.

To meet or exceed the seating position, head/shoulder room and overall volume of the front cab you need to shop a full sized pickup or SUV. Even then it may have had my '98 Navigator tied or even beat for useful driver cockpit useful space and comfort.

Oh it will be a matter of time till ford brings out the F-150 Ecoboost Diesel. It be stupid for them not to.

The problem is that if they come out with an F-150 diesel they will cannibalize sales of F-250's. Large numbers of F-250 buyers only buy it to get the diesel for towing.

The old VW flat-four aircooled engines can be turned into decent inexpensive engines for experimental light sport planes. Much cheaper than a 912 Rotax.
