What the hell was that?

So, I can time it to be in Prescott on a certain date to see one or both of you. Thoughts?
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

WC8OH 3A OH is the information format you exchange with other stations during the contest portion of Field Day. The goal is to contact as many stations as possible during the 24 hour operating period.

WC8OH is the call sign of the Club I'll be working with.

3 is the number of simultaneous HF stations on the air (We may have 4)

A is the contest operating category (no commercial power)

OH is the state (Ohio)

So, If you're in Prescott, you have a better chance of seeing Rumpshot than me.

PS: Look up Maiden Head Square system, and then look at the location on my profile.

I always wondered what that location code was you had. I had no idea.

Is that only used in amateur radio?

Oh, and I can't do the field day thing - I don't have a radio yet.
:?

In fact, I've never even made an actual transmission yet!

That's no barrier to going out to Field Day. The Elmers are always happy to help you get your feet wet!

ARRL is your friend. That is the link to the Field Day info. There is a club or more likely several clubs near you that would love to have you join them for the day to learn more about ham radio. The link may give you directions to one of these clubs.

I think these folks are reasonably close to you:
AB6MV
Moreno Valley Amateur Radio Association
23200 Eucalyptus Ave.
Moreno Valley, CA
GOTA: YES
Talk-in: 449.300 - 103.5
Contact: Karen Ott
951-809-2025
KI6SOT@yahoo.com

You will have to time your trip to Prescott to catch me, but let me know. I think you have my email addy. I work in the west Phoenix area Sun-Thu most weeks, but have been putting in overtime on Saturdays lately. Also some travel planned in the next couple of months. Really would like to meet up with you and arrange some trigger time in a "free" state.

Hmmm...you must be within fairly quick driving distance from AIM Surplus? That's handy.

I guess using this system I'm EN91.

So far as I know, although similar systems are have been used in military applications (Although First Shirt is probably the only member here that I'm sure knows the examples I'm thinking of).

Field Day is a perfect opportunity. As Rumpshot and Cybrludite mentioned it's a great opportunity to get on the air with someone there to coach and guide (i.e. "Elmer" in Ham radio lingo) you. And your license class doesn't matter, as most operations operate under a club call sign and use control ops.

In fact, there's a bonus points category called a GOTA (Get On The Air) station intended to be used by new hams to operate that adds points but does not penalize by moving the station category up by one transmitter. So, you would even be helping them just by showing up and trying to make some contacts!

ARRL Field Day Rules (PDF File)
7.3.13.1. When a GOTA operator successfully completes 20 QSOs, they
receive 20 bonus points.

7.3.13.2. If a GOTA station is supervised full-time by a GOTA Coach, the
bonus points earned for each 20 QSOs completed under Rule 7.3.13.1 will be
doubled.
7.3.13.2.1. The GOTA Coach supervises the operator of the station,
doing such things as answering questions and talking them through
contacts, but may not make QSOs or perform logging functions.

Oh, and most locations have some sort of grill out/pot luck Saturday evening. :D

OH, and not to bring this thread back on topic or anything, , the folks at field day would be good ones to talk to about sources of volunteers for your school EOC.

OK, guys! I contacted Karen through our local amateur radio club, and it turns out she was at our emergency operations meeting! So, I'll be going to Field Day, probably for two or three hours, and she said I can get my first transmission in there!

I have a terribly stupid question, I'm afraid... Rump or Randy, will I be able to talk to you on air from here? This is probably mind-bogglingly dumb to ask, but I don't know!

Great go enjoy yourself, make friends, check things out.

The big question. Will you be able to talk to one of us. The answer is an absolute, definite maybe. I don't know about Randy, but I will be working my station at my "work" home. Part time. That is, I have to work Saturday from 1pm-9pm. That is probably right in the middle of when most club stations are going strongest. I may, depending on how tired I am play radio til midnight or so. Then comes the question of what frequencies will I be working, what the atmospherics are like, etc.

My experience is to the San Diego area, I don't have much luck. The greater LA basin I sometimes workable, the Bay area is more likely and around the country from there, depending on the time of day.

In other words, you probably won't reach me. Randy should be better positioned though.

If you hear our club call (WC8OH), you might be talking to me, although during contest ops there won't be much conversation:
WC8OH I have you 3 Alpha Ohio. Thanks for the contact and good luck on the contest. CQ Field Day CQ Field day...
Contest weekends are not really great for casual conversations.

If nothing else, if you can get with someone with HF gear, we could try to set up a Sked some other time. I can do 6-80 meters mobile, and 10-40 at home.

Between 6 and 15 July the family and I will be driving a loop out to South Dakota and down through Western Nebraska and back to Ohio. I will be operating HF mobile while on the road during the days and can probably do some in the evenings as well.
