So, I can time it to be in Prescott on a certain date to see one or both of you. Thoughts?
That's no barrier to going out to Field Day. The Elmers are always happy to help you get your feet wet!workinwifdakids wrote:I always wondered what that location code was you had. I had no idea.
Is that only used in amateur radio?
Oh, and I can't do the field day thing - I don't have a radio yet.

In fact, I've never even made an actual transmission yet!

ARRL is your friend. That is the link to the Field Day info. There is a club or more likely several clubs near you that would love to have you join them for the day to learn more about ham radio. The link may give you directions to one of these clubs.workinwifdakids wrote:I always wondered what that location code was you had. I had no idea.

You will have to time your trip to Prescott to catch me, but let me know. I think you have my email addy. I work in the west Phoenix area Sun-Thu most weeks, but have been putting in overtime on Saturdays lately. Also some travel planned in the next couple of months. Really would like to meet up with you and arrange some trigger time in a "free" state.AB6MV

Hmmm...you must be within fairly quick driving distance from AIM Surplus? That's handy.PS: Look up Maiden Head Square system, and then look at the location on my profile.
So far as I know, although similar systems are have been used in military applications (Although First Shirt is probably the only member here that I'm sure knows the examples I'm thinking of).workinwifdakids wrote:I always wondered what that location code was you had. I had no idea.

Field Day is a perfect opportunity. As Rumpshot and Cybrludite mentioned it's a great opportunity to get on the air with someone there to coach and guide (i.e. "Elmer" in Ham radio lingo) you. And your license class doesn't matter, as most operations operate under a club call sign and use control ops.Oh, and I can't do the field day thing - I don't have a radio yet.

7.3.13.1. When a GOTA operator successfully completes 20 QSOs, they
receive 20 bonus points.
7.3.13.2. If a GOTA station is supervised full-time by a GOTA Coach, the
bonus points earned for each 20 QSOs completed under Rule 7.3.13.1 will be
doubled.
7.3.13.2.1. The GOTA Coach supervises the operator of the station,
doing such things as answering questions and talking them through
contacts, but may not make QSOs or perform logging functions.
Great go enjoy yourself, make friends, check things out.workinwifdakids wrote:OK, guys! I contacted Karen through our local amateur radio club, and it turns out she was at our emergency operations meeting! So, I'll be going to Field Day, probably for two or three hours, and she said I can get my first transmission in there!

I have a terribly stupid question, I'm afraid... Rump or Randy, will I be able to talk to you on air from here? This is probably mind-bogglingly dumb to ask, but I don't know!
Contest weekends are not really great for casual conversations.WC8OH I have you 3 Alpha Ohio. Thanks for the contact and good luck on the contest. CQ Field Day CQ Field day...
