Time Lapse Photos

As you may, or may not know, we will be moving out of the double-wide that has been our residence for 13 years. On the footprint of said double-wide we will be building a two story house, on a slab, complete with a 2 car attached garage.

I would like to have a daily time lapse photo of the whole process. It should be, at least, partially automated. I know that I don't know much about performing long-term time lapse photography. HELP.

A side note. I am interested in the GoPro Hero3+ Silver Edition. Not sure why, as I don't normally do that much video shooting. But there have been several occasions, when I had the time to set it up, that a video would have been quite good to have on hand. At least one of which qualified as a "hold my beer and watch this" that was very intentional. And no, Murphy did not get invited, nor did he crash the party.

Comments on either or both thoughts are welcome and solicited.

What you're looking for is a time-lapse camera, much like deer hunters use to take time-lapse photographs of food plots or shooting lanes. Several manufacturers make them, but the most popular are seen here. Prices from under $100 to over $200 are most common. My buddy who uses these things likes the Brinno cameras but the difference among the several brands iis like the difference between Ford and Chevrolet.

Are you going to mount it on an elevated position to get more of overhead-type view shots? That would be cool!

OxBlue may be WAYYYYY more than you're wanting to spend, but they are the go to system for capital construction projects. Maybe searching a bit will yield a similar, less pricey alternative.

Mike, you gave me an idea about that. I was considering a "street" view from the front fence, but I have been concerned about theft/vandalism. I can mount it on my weather station pole and get a little higher view. That may be too close to the site though. I do have a ham radio antenna tower (currently without antennas) that would give some height and the appropriate distance AND be less susceptible to theft/vandalism.

PawPaw, the Brinno cameras have a lot going for them. Long battery life and lots of flexibility on how often the shutter trips. 2 1/2 months on a set of AA batteries and the number of frames will not overload the video card. I am considering this one very seriously.

I can take a picture every hour and only have 1800 frames in 87 days. Or every 30 minutes and have 3700 frames for the same 87 days. That should give me a pretty good record and allow for battery change and card replacement without interruption.

The view from the tower should include most of the site from a 16 foot elevation.

Steamforger, Oxblue doesn't cite their prices, which I take to mean that I don't want to shop there. Like you said, probably more expensive. If I were in serious construction, they look like a reasonable option. This is a one-time record of the build.

For some reason I remember $700-ish being thrown about for one of our projects at State. That was more than a few years ago and could be completely wrong. I feel like it's one of those "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" things. I only mentioned it in the hope it would point you to something more economical. Hell, can you get a trail cam that can fire off 10 seconds of video every hour?
