Dude, on some tours I've had to haul around my luggage AND as many as SIX different trumpets, in various keys. When I can carry a single satchel with a laptop, tablet, and reader, I'm good, trust me. 8-)
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

I prefer my Kindle paper white for reading. The battery in it lasts for around weeks, too.

For things other than reading, I have a Kindle Fire and a Samsung Galaxy tab.
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.

One piece of luggage and with the new high tech cloths etc, a small suitcase is all I need for a couple months , I get if you have professional requirements ymmv. For me 20 to 30 lbs and a carry on is all that is required , and it makes travel so much nicer , so a 7" tablet and smart phone is perfect.

Between my wife and I we have two Kindles (the plain, e-reader version, in fact mine is the first model they made), a full-sized iPad, a laptop, and two Android smartphones.

My wife seldom uses her kindle anymore (in fact one of these days I'll trade my old kindle for her newer model), she reads on the iPad, but she doesn't read while commuting so the bigger size isn't an issue for her. I commute three hours a day, and spend most of that time reading. I've tried reading with the iPad, I find it a bit big and heavy for holding for long periods. Even the smaller tablets like Kindle Fire I've found the screen to be hard on my eyes after a while.

I carry the Kindle and smartphone daily, so I have internet access on the phone if needed.

Specialization is a good thing if the specialized tool does what it does significantly better than the more general-purpose tool. The general purpose tools sometimes do everything, but don't do anything REALLY well.

Not a bad start. I have been known to go to gigs with a euphonium, a baritone horn, a sousaphone and a trombone. I ought to have had native bearers.

+ whatever on a Kindle as a pure-reader device. I really, really like my first-generation Kindle. Clear text, readable in bright light, even at the beach, and long, long battery life. Cheap enough that I won't be upset if I lose or break it. Recommended.

Backlit screens play hob with my eyes. I'll keep an e-ink reader only as long as I can. I loves me my Nook (Simple Touch or something, I think). Project Gutenberg has any number of free books in all formats. Having several books in a small format has saved my mood on many flights.

Care to expound on the new high tech clothes? Actually, I'd love to see your entire packing list for a couple of months in 20-30 lbs with some of your budget assumptions, if you're willing to share. My dream is to be able to do pack lightly, travel, and work while on the road.

Given this comment and the traveling threads, I'm going to start another thread asking people's advice on travel clothing.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D
