Network card adapter issues

Post by Precision »

I have a cheap Toshiba laptop that is mine through work. I just bought it a few months ago and I am having the devil of a time keeping connected to the internet.

The fix is to do the diagnostic and resetting the network adapter card fixes the issue 95% of the time. I am running Win 8 on this machine.

I assume this will be covered under warranty, but is this a software issue or a hardware issue. Is there anything I could be doing to screw this up.

An example, I just reset the damn thing and in the time it took to type this, I need to reset it again. Sometimes it stays connected for an hour or two, sometimes a minute or two.

In my experience, network problems are frequently because of bad cables or routers that have gone flaky. If you have a wired network connection, change the cable out for a known good one (failing that, a new in the wrapper one). In any case, reset your router by powering it off and back on.

Is this your wireless adapter? My Dell does the same thing on the wireless connection. Wired works great, wireless not so much. Mine does this no matter which network I'm connected to. I suspect mine is a Windows (XP Pro) problem, 'cause when I run Knoppix and connect wireless, I don't have the same problem.

Have you run your machine with a different OS and connected wireless? My wireless adapter is an Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG network adapter. Are you running the same wireless adapter?

damn thing timed out when I was trying to post on this thread.

I have a realtek 8188 as my wireless network adaptor. I will likely just try to get it fixed under warranty or if cheap enough, get a local shop to do it.

When I mentioned trying a different OS, I meant something like a LIVE bootable CD or DVD running Linux/KNOPPIX. Something that doesn't need to mess with your hard drive or existing Windows installation.

Oh, I called for warranty. Waste of time.

Called the local guy. $40 and I'll be fixed. For that price it isn't even worth opening it myself and comes out to about the cost of shipping for warranty work. so warranty work is a waste of time.
